My Favorite Award Of Last Night

After seeing Brokeback Mountain for the third time I had written a short email to a small group of people making my final comments on the film. The one thing I pointed out most importantly to me at the time, was that I felt like the music in the movie itself was personified. It was like every time I heard that same painful tune it was as if ( Read more... )

I agree that the music was fantastic, but was disappointed that it did not win for the best movie - that award went to Crash.

I did hear a bit ago, that judges were voting for Crash because the "academy" tends to be comprised of older individuals who may not appreciate the content of Brokeback.

Stats support this, if it's true (which I am not certain of) - we see huge gaps in the acceptance of gay/lesbian people and content from generation to generation.

So while, like you, I was happy for the awards that it won...more importantly I hope that it will encourage more actors to take the risk (knowing their careers will not be damaged), etc...

I was definitely delighted that Gustavo Santaolalla won because of all the movies out there, his score was the one that affected me the most. Whereas it seems that the scores to most movies complement their respective films, his music seemed to weave itself through Brokeback Mountain. I guess in other words, the movie and music were one entity, whereas I hardly ever get that impression from other movies.

For me, I was equally excited that Brokeback Mountain won the Adapted Screenplay award and Crash won the Original Screenplay award. I'm glad Crash received the recognition it did for its writing, but the achievement of the year was adapting that short short story into the rewarding full-length motion picture that it is. So for the most part, I think the Academy got it right.

i too was thrilled for gustavo...that is, until his name somehow got into my dream last night...i was calling the actor who plays Carlos on Desperate Housewives, "Gustavo" and explaining to him that we couldn't have an affair because i like girls and Gabby was in the room...it was really strange...and i just kept saying, "Oh, Gustavo...we just can't, Gustavo"...like i felt compelled to say his name over and over...weird...

but a great score! *smile*
