Tonight I went to the movies with my Christian friend Lucky. She is one of the people in my life, who despite a tremendously close friendship, does not know about the history of myself and BK. Anyway, as she becomes increasingly Christian (or increasingly devoted to Jesus Christ her Savior) her opinions become more and more aligned with those of our President (ouch). Anyhoo, as we made plans to go to the movie throughout the day she seemed to be pushing Brokeback Mountain. Now, rumor has it, though I’ve never seen the dreadful thing, she is in possession of a bumper sticker that proclaims marriage is a holy union only to be shared by people with different private parts (though I wouldn’t think it says it in quite that way, but I’m sure you get the point.)…but again I digress…so anyway she has said in the past that she would not ever say anything against homosexuals, but she truly believes in the eyes of the Lord, and the words of the Bible back her up, that it’s wrong. So why then does she want to see Brokeback? I think she wanted to prove to me, her daughter, and maybe even herself, that she would be ok with seeing it. She did say to me the other day, after watching a special about Brokeback Mountain on our cable system’s gay tv station (LOGO) that the kissing between Heath and Jake didn’t bother her since she “knows they aren’t really gay,” and that if it were two people who were “really gay” it would be more of an issue. Well I didn’t feel it was my place to see this movie with her when it affected me as it did, and I wasn’t going to break down and divulge my hidden past, so I requested we see something else. So we agreed upon Match Point, the latest installment by Woody Allen. Movie was wonderful, and I’m not spoiling anything by saying the story focuses around an extramarital affair between the characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. When we left the theater Lucky proclaimed that she enjoyed the movie and we had good conversation about the story and the characters and the crafty, irony clad film style of Woody Allen (of whom I am no expert as this was my first of his films). But something I couldn’t help think about as I was driving home, after dropping Lucky off, was the Ten Commandments. Now it’s not everyday you hear me saying something like that, and by no means am I an expert on that little list any more than I would be on Woody’s past works. But I am knowledgeable enough to know that, “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” made the cut the day those stones were carved. So why then was there no mention from Lucky about how she didn’t believe in adultery, and how the Bible backs her up on that one? Well, I guess it must be because Scarlett and Jonathan aren’t really married so they weren’t really having an affair. I mean what else could it be?
