i really fell behind with this one

and another week goes by without a savannah post...yea i'm sorry work has been silly lately. but i've gotten through the entire day of saturday typed up so that's a start. yea and so i know that a week almost went by without a movie post...well here it is.

so apparently i've been sucking at writing about what has actually been going on in my life besides watching movies. we've gone to a local concert twice now called "Music for Sunday Evening in the Park." all summer they have live music by various concert bands and other such groups in different parks around the greensboro area. we've gone to one at the historic Blandwood Mansion (the old governor's mansion) and the one the sunday before last was at Latham Park - the part we were in was not so scenic.

we also saw our last play for the season called Tobacco Road. it was very good but very disturbing and sad at the same time. it was the 2nd year for the Theater 232 production where UNCG theater students team up with the triad stage for some other productions as well as the main one. they did a play for children during the day and a "Sick 'N Wrong" theater for adults production at night on the weekends. they did the same thing last year and we saw Morticians in Love. this year it was Sleeping Beauty or Coma (where sleeping beauty was a model during the 60s or something) and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom (about feuding vampire lesbians throughout different periods of time).

we went to buffalo wild wings one night and played trivia. it happened to be an ultimate fight night (which is funny because it was getting late and we weren't really sure what they would be playing on the televisions). we were doing pretty good too...maybe we should go back and play when we can actually win something.

i had an interview for an awesome GA position but unfortunately i didn't get it. part of the reason was something about how they think i'm doing too much (my program is demanding and i'm going to try and work as well). the key word there is "try" which the guy said to me so i'm kinda confused. i guess i didnt emphasize the "try" enough. well he was saying something about how they hope they get to work with me at some point and talked about volunteering and getting paid for an internship. i dont really know if he meant i could have an internship there but that doesn't really make sense since it's not in my field. and if they didnt think i had time for class and a GA position and a job then how am i going to have time to add volunteering in there? whatever.

we went to benson, nc for Crownbeat. it's a part of the DCI (Drum Corps International) summer shows. those of you who know curtis know he's a big band dork especially when it comes to drums. we went with norm who went to grad school with curtis.

went to a grasshoppers game on Friday for UNCG Launch (their summer orientation program). the third baseman essentially lost the game for us. i think we were one out away from winning and he had an error on an easy out which led to a tie which led to extra innings which led to the other team winning. we actually left before the end of the game (we stayed through the 10th inning).

this past weekend we went to the park on sunday morning and had lunch and feed the ducks/geese. then we walked around and there was a guy walking a goat. i'm not kidding.

so curtis and i saw this thing on the news a few days ago about people who got very sunburned even though they were wearing sun block and everything. turns out that there's something in lemons and limes (and some other fruits and veggies) that makes your skin extra extra sensitive to the sun. it's called "Phytophotodermatitis." maybe it's just me...but if there has always been some sort of condition where touching popular summer fruits could cause you to get these horrible burns then we should have heard about it before. neither curtis or i OR even the newscaster that was reporting on it had heard of this before. i went and looked it up online and found a johns hopkins photo gallery with some pretty gross pictures of the condition. the wording of the cases was funny because they used the phrases "the patient admitted to or the patient confessed to eating limes, etc, like it's a crime or something.

we had a leftover week this week. the movies for the week were The Wicker Man - the 2006 remake (leftover from "scary movie" week), Valiant (leftover from animated week), The Muppet Movie (leftover from muppet week), and In Search of Dr. Seuss (i dont know what week this is from).

The Wicker Man 2005 - Sheriff Edward Maulis ( Nicolas Cage) gets more than he bargained for when he probes a young girl's disappearance in Neil LaBute's remake of the 1973 psychological thriller. The investigation leads the sheriff to an island off of Maine, where he encounters a populace of modern pagans. As he follows a string of progressively disturbing clues, the trail leads him to a shocking conclusion. Ellen Burstyn, Molly Parker and Leelee Sobieski co-star.

yea not scary...still pretty interesting and not so bad but i hear that it seems terrible when compared to the original version. i didnt realize what was actually happening in the movie until right before the end.

Valiant 2005 - During World War II, a misfit pigeon named Valiant (voice of Ewan McGregor) joins the Royal Pigeon Service to do his bit for his country. Valiant's job turns out to be one of the most important of the war -- carrying essential messages from the French to the Allied forces just prior to D-Day. Gary Chapman directs this animated film that also features the voices of Ricky Gervais, Jim Broadbent, John Cleese, Tim Curry, Rupert Farley and John Hurt.

very cute movie not the best animated movie ever but it was still cute and amusing. it was weird that there was an animated kid's movie all about war.

The Muppet Movie 1979 - According to Kermit, this is the story of how the Muppets were first formed. After deciding to pursue a career in acting, Kermit takes off on a cross-country trek to find fame in Hollywood. Along the way, he meets Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy , Gonzo and the rest of the Muppets cast, and they all chip in to help Kermit evade the evil Doc Hopper, who wants Kermit to be his "spokesman" for his Frog Leg restaurant chain.

awesome of course, i think this moves up the list of my favorite muppet movies. great cameo by big bird in it!

In Search of Dr. Seuss 1994 - Where in the world is Dr. Seuss? Kathy Najimy joins comic greats Robin Williams , Billy Crystal and Christopher Lloyd in a stellar salute to the father of charmingly loopy wordsmithery. Najimy plays a "reporter" who journeys through a distinctively Seussian world (melding live action and animation) to find the man responsible for such literary wonders as "Green Eggs and Ham," "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" and more.

it was a cute documentary about seuss. there were clips from the original animated features, illustrations from his books, new songs, and some archive footage. we learned a lot about dr. seuss. the extras even included a cartoon of "private snafu" who was a cartoon that was made for the soldiers during world war ii which contained a lot of x-rated material. of course the one that they had on there wasn't one of those sketches.

phytophotodermatitis, movies, grasshoppers, triad stage, dci
