Last night my Mom and I went to see "Superman Returns" .... The theater was packed and people were excited as they clapped & cheered as soon the Superman theme music started playing ... This was nice since the last time that happened when I went to a movie was when I saw "Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire" back in November.
So did "Superman Returns" lived up to the fan's excitement?? I highly recommend that you go and see this film in theaters. Unless you have a BIG SCREEN TV at home with Surround Sound set up then you will really not experience the bigness(word?) of this movie. Particularly the first big action sequence with Superman.
Let's rate the movie on a scale of recent/past Superheroes films ....
I hold
X2, Superman I & II, Batman & Batman Returns, Batman Begins, The Incredibles and Spiderman 2 as superhero movies that are just Great!
Superman Returns falls into the Very Good category of films such as XMen, Spiderman, and Hulk. These movies were very good and diffilcult to find a real fault with them but to me, and perhaps this is because it was the first in a pre-planned series of films, they were used more to set up the characters and background and thus sometimes they dragged(less with XMen but it happened) .... Now this is my personal views, I know that some people might have different likes and what-not...
I like Bryan Singer, I can only imagine what he could've done with X3 had he not left to make Superman Returns, so I am confident that when he does the next installment(and does anyone doubt that there won't be at least 2 more films? Seems that now-a-days the "in" thing is to do Trilogies) It will be a film that will be more polished and more fast paced and thus better ....
What I loved :
1. The Look - After getting over the fact that Superman's cape was not RED I liked the way he looked. Brandon Routh is beautiful. there is no going around that. He has "The Look" and not once looking at him did I find myself thinking "He's not Superman" or anything like that.
2. The Flying - It looks so smooth and just as if it's a part of Superman, as it should be. He even floats and even that looks effortless.
3. The Action - Honestly? The main action piece of the film is in the first 20-40 minutes of the movie(it's a 2 hr 49 min film), when Superman saves Lois Lane along with many others from a potentially horrifying plane crash. It was just breathtaking and a perfect re-introduction of Superman to the world that he had left 5 years before.
4. The Kid - The kid is cute. Very cute. They do not give him much to do or say, but because he's playing a 5 yr old I didn't really mind it. The moment when it's revealed who his father really is just had the theater clapping.
What I liked, but didn't love :
1. Clark Kent/Superman : He was too angsty, too brooding. This reminded me of Clark from the "Smallville" tv series, but that show can get away with it because we've seen him as a teen adjusting to his responsibilities and trying to understand where he comes from. In the movie this is not the case and the only reason he is like that is because of Lois Lane. I mean where was Clark's quirkiness? His sense of humor? His clumsiness was there but not the other stuff. Same with Superman, only at the end of the film due to the discovery of having a son did he seemed to be truly happy.
2. Lois Lane's lack of reguard for Clark : Now I know that LL overlooked Clark and that she had this sort of thing for not paying attention to what he was doing or saying since she was so wrapped up in Superman but in the film, with certain things that they have the character say or the people close to the character say, it makes it seem like Clark is just not important in her life. AT ALL. Weren't they partners? Didn't they become friends? In this film is as if they are merely acquiantances and nothing more, to her.
3. Lex Luthor : He didn't chill me, nor did I think he was very funny. Yeah he had moments that he made me chuckle, what he wanted to do would be scary but it's like he was stuck trying to play both. The psychotic evil mastermind who is stuck with henchmen who just know a man like him would NOT have if he really wanted to succeed. Nothing as bad as how Otis was in the original films but still. I like Kevin Spacey but his Lex left me with "Whatever" .... The only moment that I truly felt chilled with him was when he got the upper hand on Superman, that was a bit hard to watch. Had he been that way throughout the whole film then I might have been more effective.
4. Lois Lane : Damn Kate Bosworth! She didn't induce me to cringe everytime she was onscreen. However, and I don't blame her for this(can you believe it?) because I think it was the writers and the Director's choice as how Lois would be played. She was serious, torn, and a sort of an investigative reporter. Nothing bad with those things. However what she lacked was Lois Lane's sassiness, charisma, sense of humor. It was noticeable because ALL the LL's before her(be it in film, comics, or tv shows) had/have it.
There is nothing that I hated about the film ....
Now because the WB asked the "Smallville" tv directors and producers NOT to introduce General Zod because of their Superman franchise I can only assume that General Zod and that whole storyline might be part of the next film ....
Well, that's all for today ...
I want to wish a HAPPY CANADA DAY to all my Canadian friends *HUGS* <3
Also, today is Day 1 in the NHL's Free Agency period ... I am nervously excited and cautiously worried as to what my Rangers will do and whom they will go after and for HOW MUCH they will go after that player ... I really would love Jay McKee as oppossed to Zdeno Charra ... why? Charra was completely exposed by the Buffalo Sabres ... yeah he is a big physical guy but he, unlike a D guy like Pronger, is slow and could not help his team contain the smaller, and speedier Sabres ... McKee did a great job in Buffalo and if we can get him then we might be able to sign another quality DMan instead of only signing 1 guy, we can get 2 quality ones.
Also, we have about 3 guys that are FA's that I don't want to lose ... Straka and Sykora are at the top of my list .... The Rangers have been VERY quiet so far, they haven't even signed their Restricted FA's but I think it's because other teams have to give up Draft picks for them so the Rangers know that they have the luxury to wait on them ... I don't know .. they BETTER do something =P
