When Lana realized that fireworks were going to take place out over the river she decided it would be a great excuse to have friends over. She handwavily called or emailed everyone she knew and told them to bring along anyone they wanted. Her apartment had a great view of the river and there was a sort of common yard for the apartment almost on ( Read more... )

Ben and Michael had been needing to get out of the apartment and socialize, and what better reason than the 4th of July? Lana's invitation couldn't have come at a better time. The door was open and they entered Lana's apartment, a gift for the hostess in Ben's hands.

"Hey!" Lana exclaimed, hugging them both! "I'm so glad you came!" She smiled at the gift. "Aw... that's so sweet. You really didn't have to!"

"Of course we did," Ben said with a grin. "That's what family's for, right?"

"I guess it is," she said smiling at him. "Oh, I'm so glad you're here! I know it was kind of last minute, but I just thought, well... it's the Fourth!"

"That's all right. We were just wondering what to do with ourselves anyway. If we had given it any forethought, we probably would have gone to Pittsburgh for the long weekend, but it was already mostly over by the time we even thought of it." Ben slid his arm around Michael and squeezed his shoulders. "We haven't seen you since before Father's Day, right? Our son called. He's gone home -- well, home for him, to Pittsburgh. He's going to be living with Michael's mom and hopefully go back to school in the fall."

Lana's eyes shone. "He called! Oh, I'm so happy for you! And you know he's someplace safe and doing well..." She hugged them both again. "I can't imagine how happy you must be!"

"We're ecstatic," Ben said with a grin. "We went up to see him weekend before last, just to...well...see him. Hug him. See with our own eyes that he's okay."

Michael rolled his eyes. "Especially him," he said, nodding toward Ben. "He's a very protective dad. I swear those two are joined at the hip when they're together. Blood ties couldn't be stronger."

"Chosen family works pretty darned well." Ben nodded and winked at Lana.

"That's wonderful," she said. She shook her head. "There just aren't enough words. And yeah, chosen family works out very well. Lucky for me." She grinned at them both.

Michael nodded solemnly, but there was a twinkle in his eye. "See, if it weren't for chosen family out here, I think Ben would have just stayed in Pittsburgh with his son." Michael gave his husband a teasing grin.

"Aw... That's so sweet," Lana said and hugged them again. "Sorry. I'm just in a really huggy mood."

"That's not a problem," Ben said, casting a slight glare at his husband. "So how have you been? Haven't seen you in yoga class lately, I figured you must be pretty busy."

Lana nodded. "Things have been a little busy at work. And I keep getting distracted at the last minute and not being able to sneak away a little early. I miss it though."

"I may have some yoga DVDs I can loan you, see if you like them. That way if you can't make it to class, you can still do the exercises. I still need to talk to them about moving the class to nights -- I am going to be teaching in the fall, and I'm not sure if the afternoons will conflict with classes at the university."

"That would be great," Lana said. "Both the borrowing the DVD's and the maybe moving the classes to nights. I just can't always get away in the afternoon."

Ben nodded. "You're not the only one with that problem. I think they're worried about that area of town at night, but you know..." He flexed his arms. "If anyone needs to be walked to their car or anything, I'd be more than happy to do that." He grinned.
