The org that I work for finally figured out that there are three things that will motivate us workers: food, money, and time off. This year we finally got salary increases and there is a trend of providing extra days off around holidays or giving out extra personal days. I'm all for it. Lucky me, I had the Friday before July 4th off as well as the Monday afterward.
I had a really great 4 days some of my own doing and some good fortune that really was out of my control. Here is the rundown:
My team won pub trivia night on Thursday. Awesome, I am so often the runner-up, which is OK as long as there is not a giant boot of beer (see previous post). Natural history and geography quiz sponsored by the Burke Museum and prizes were free admission to the museum and $50 certificate to the College Inn Pub. Nice!
Holland beat Brazil.
Ghana v. Uruguay game was super exciting and full of controversy.
More World Cup on Saturday with Germany thrashing Argentina. I've never been a fan of the Argies, but this year they had 4 players that I either kind of liked in club play or I respected for skill. Nonetheless, I was happy to the see them out of the tournament.
This is my "Summer of Mulch." Yes, summer of mulch and how exciting that will be. Ten cubic feet of mulch sits in my side yard waiting for a new home.
jgstewart and I have been gradually spreading the mulch about, but really that is a lot of mulch. However, looking at that huge pile of mulch every day has made me more determined to shrink it. We did a lot of gardening/clearing weeds on Sunday and Monday.
To celebrate the day of our independence, which we kind of forgot about until we discovered that the pet store was closed, we shopped the farmer's market and had bison burgers. Local produce and native fauna! Only afte we ate the bison did I learn of the recall. Neither of us are ill, so I believe we are ok.
I made freezer jam and a strawberry cobbler too. Also because we bought a flat of berries and It thought "Wow, that is a lot of berries." A pattern forms. If I buy it, then I will deal with it.
Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz, our friends from north of the border, were in town for a show at Motor. It is a shame that BJB shows are never well attended in Seattle. This was was even more sparse than usual due to the holiday and the live show running concurrent with fireworks displays around town. This was the first show I had seen with out sCare-oline and a new upright bass player. While of course I miss Caroline, this new line-up was pretty rockin'.
To cap it off, you know springboard a good weekend into a great weekend, jgs and I watched
Dead Snow. A Nazi zombie movie with many, many nods to Evil Dead. This movie kicks ass, even more than Kick Ass kicked ass. Some truly awesome moments and a killer soundtrack. If you are into horror or just into zombie flicks--see it now.
