I would like to talk about Glee.
When I first watched it, I thought it was entertaining enough because the numbers were great. They are all very talented singers (except for Finn. He should have the words SCROTUM tattooed onto his forehead because he seems to be missing one) and I'm so cheap when it comes to amazing singing. But come on, the Golden Globe for Best Musical or COMEDY television series? I have a problem with this for two reasons:
1) First of all, I don't even know why MUSICAL and COMEDY are in the same category. They're two completely different genres that have nothing to do with one another. The musical I can understand, but COMEDY? HELLO? What's that you say? And it also won the People's Choice Award for Best New Comedy? Again with the "comedy"! Who the hell dubbed this show as comedy? I have watched my fair share of comedies, hell I even tried watching Joey's spinoff from FRIENDS, so I would like to think that I know comedy. This isn't comedy. There are so many other shows out there that deserve the title of best COMEDY. Those two shouldn't even but in one category. What the ef Golden Globes?
2) The first 13 episodes of the season, the ones that were released before the long break, are crap. Okay, maybe that's being a bit too harsh, but they weren't good. There were about 10 stories that they were trying to mesh together, putting the Glee Club as the quintessential backdrop to their coming together as a group, and as friends. It sounds great on paper but they just weren't able to pull it off. It's like the Breakfast Club gone terribly wrong. Considering this was the first season, they didn't establish anything at all with the first 13 episodes. I saw only one side of the characters, and there was no story arc anywhere in sight. And I couldn't understand if they wanted continuity or not. Some shows, like CSI or Castle, where the seasons are episodic, meaning you can watch the episodes standing alone, without any prior knowledge about the past episodes. This obviously wasn't one of them, because they introduced so many long standing plot lines. But then things kept happening out of the blue that it just got really annoying. Like the episode where Puck and Rachel get together? Wtf was that?
With that said. I have just finished getting caught up on the new seven episodes, and I was pleasantly surprised. Bear in mind that I was watching with an extra critical eye and a sarcastic tone of voice. But, really, the show has immensely improved. There is actually some sort of continuity in the plot, and the script is much, much better. I don't find myself saying "wtf" so much anymore because the episodes and the plot lines are now starting to make sense. Fina-frickin-lly.
I like how the characters are developing, and developing fast. Hopefully this is because the writers realized that they were moving at a glacial pace in the beginning. I like how they tackled so many different issues in just seven episodes: the modern day teenager, the real difficulties of high school, individuality, sexuality, homosexuality, and your dreams. And all this in seven episodes? I'm impressed.
To be honest, I only started watching the new episodes because I heard that Idina Menzel was on the show. I adore her and would give my left boob to be able to sing like her, so I knew I had to do it. I loved her song numbers, I loved her story line in the show, and I loved her. The only thing I have to say about it to the writers is this: you get a chance to sing ONE song with your long lost mother who is also very, very talented, and this has been your fantasy ever since you realized that neither of your two dads have boobies. So what do you sing? ... Of course! Lady Gaga!
It irked me that for all the references that Rachel kept making about Funny Girl (which is the exact same musical that turned my heart into mush and made me realize that life is always better in song) I really expected them to sing something from there. Or to be cheesy, something from Wicked. Or ANYTHING AT ALL THAT WARRANTS IDINA MENZEL'S SINGING!
...but no. They went with the Gaga. Sigh.
Anyway, having gotten that out of the way, I must say that I'm looking forward to the new episodes, and the new season. I think I'll keep watching until I get too annoyed at Rachel's singing face, or if Santana ever gets taken out (cos she's the hottest one in the cast anyway.) Or if Charice Pempengco actually really does join the cast.
P.S.
Just cause I want to.
