[Her brief stint as an amateur psychologist wasn't a complete waste, Bellis was able to learn a few things. She knows she has to ask questions if she expects to find a way out of Luceti, but it's difficult to know which questions to ask. A clue to come from anywhere. She doesn't particularly enjoy addressing the entire town, but she sees the ( Read more... )

"Xenians" - interesting word. I've not heard it before.

Many I know are somewhat reluctant to share cultural details with outsiders.

It comes from the language Ragamoll. It seems it doesn't translate as easily as other words. Perhaps it lacks an equivalent in many languages?

Many in my world are the same way, but I see no harm in asking.

That's possible. There are a few words I've used here that the Universal Translator seems to have trouble with, though all are pretty much untranslatable, so I shouldn't be surprised.

I don't know the language "Ragamoll", but "xenian" sounds Greek to me - literally.

No harm in asking, no, but answers may not be readily forthcoming. What I know about xenoculture from my world, well, I could tell you some of it, but a lot of it is... privileged information.

You work for a government in your home world?

I understand, tell me what you can.

Hm. I've never thought of it like that, but technically I suppose I do. Starfleet is a Federation-run organization, but I'm not in politics.

Oh! Well that'd take a lot of telling. The library might be your best bet, I've found several books that seem to have information from my world.

I'd start with the Founders, if I were you. Aside from humans, they are Tellarites, Andorians and Vulcans.

[Fleet? Sounds like she is part of a navy...]

Terrarites, Andorians and Vulcans. I see. Why are those four known as the Founders?

They are the four founding races of the Federation, a powerful interplanetary governmental body in my world.

Interplanetary? Your people have developed a way to travel between planets?

Yes. We call it a warp drive - an engine capable of traveling faster than the speed of light.

Faster than light? I did not know that was possible. Does it use crisis energy?

Einstein didn't think it was, but we proved him wrong.

I'm not sure what crisis energy is, but we utilize an element known as dilithium in my world. It's rather unstable, but we've learned how to harness it into usable energy for warp-speed travel.

Ah, a substance that must be undiscovered in mine. Who is Einstein?

Albert Einstein. Early 20th century Earth physicist. He made many great strides in our understanding of the universe up until that point. We don't hold it against him that one of his most famous theories was proven wrong.

I see. I wonder if there are major differences in the physics of our worlds.

Hard to say. You might be able to find more information in the library. I'm not a physicist myself, just a linguist.

A linguist? So am I.
