[Her brief stint as an amateur psychologist wasn't a complete waste, Bellis was able to learn a few things. She knows she has to ask questions if she expects to find a way out of Luceti, but it's difficult to know which questions to ask. A clue to come from anywhere. She doesn't particularly enjoy addressing the entire town, but she sees the ( Read more... )

It would take a lot more understanding of my world to know the reasons for that. But yes, this is going to be a long response.

First off my world is composed of four planets. One, Palma, no longer exists due to events in the past. Of the types of people who exist, they are named after the planet they originated from.

Palmanians are what everyone else here calls humans. Since their planet no longer exists, they have been forced to take up residence on the other two. Honestly, it's pretty amazing to consider how well they were able to acclimate to worlds that were not exactly suited for them.

Motavians are basically furry blue creatures. They originate on the planet Motavia which is a desert world, so their people tend to prefer to live a simple nomadic life and their villages are composed of tents and other temporary dwellings.

Dezolisians live on a frozen planet called Dezolis. Since their planet is one of snow and ice, they have very thick green skin and also are very tall in stature. They seem to do very well on such a planet.

Then there are the ones that aren't named for a planet. The espers, which are a race of people who look otherwise like Palmanians, but they differ in the fact that they have incredible skills in magic, healing and psychic skills. They are few in number now thanks to persecution, but among them is the greatest store of knowledge of the world as a whole. They live on Dezolis after being forced off Palma.

Then there are the musk cats. They are basically small little creatures that most would say are like talking cats. There are very few of them left and they live in a small area of Dezolis that is the only place that is not a frozen wasteland.

And actually, I was slightly off, I could technically say seven. The sixth would be an artifical creation called a 'numan'. They tend to grow and develop quickly from what I have seen and honestly only one really exists. She was bred by an AI using an old prototype that combined humans with monsters, so she has rather long ears, but otherwise looks human. More may have been created later, but the AI who created her no longer exists.

And then lastly, there are also creatures that are basically machines capable of intelligent and logical thought. Some of these are what controls our climate control systems, but there are also two androids capable of moving around freely. I'd count them, because honestly they have personalities and are quite capable of intelligence, more so than some Palmanians I've met.

[Most of it wasn't terribly useful, but it was fascinating nonetheless]

From your descriptions, they sound nothing like the Xenians of my world. Or perhaps they do, there are still many unexplored lands in Bas-Lag. Why were the espers persecuted? And the androids sound like sentient constructs. I have heard theories and rumors, but I did not know such a thing was possible.

The androids were indeed very possible to make in the past. A lot of our technology died out when Palma was destroyed and in the aftermath of that. My world is a mix of very incredibly technology and very little at all. Most people could spend their whole lives never having seen any of the ancient technology.

As far as why the espers were persecuted? Well, would you trust someone who is telepathic? It was fear. That is why they remain hidden even now.

I see. My world has some lost technology, as well. How was Palma destroyed?

Telepathy... I see.

An artifical satellite crashed into it.

An artificial satellite? You mean a man-made moon?

I don't know what it looked like actually since that was about a thousand years ago. There are other such things that still exist, mostly climate control facilities.

And I think you're the first person who actually seemed to understand some of this stuff. Most people when I mention something like that just are confused.

I come from the most scientifically advanced city known in my world. At least, the most advanced one that still exists. Still, we have not found a way to travel to another planet.

Currently, we can't in my world either. That doesn't mean that relics of the past don't still exist, but compared to what I know of the history, it's a very different world now than it was.

Mine was very different in the past, too...

Yes, New Crobuzon lost some technology in past wars. And long before the rise of New Crobuzon there was the Ghosthead Empire. The Ghosthead were a mysterious race who controlled most of the world.

I have to wonder just what sort of wars and disasters can truly cause such a loss of technology, but yet looks like it isn't too abnormal.

Yes, it's hard to imagine that something could be so powerful that it could completely destroy the Ghosthead.
