Tenderest touch leaves the darkest of marks
And the kindest of kisses break the hardest of hearts

'I love you'
Dan said that to two girls. Not one, but two. Three words, eight letters, two girls and one boy. (Someone forgot to add in one broken heart.)
The first time the word love dawned on him was when he met a statue of a girl made of pure gold.
Those who already saw this sculpture told him too stay away from it. She's a rare siren seen in tales of Homer and exquisite poems by Sappho. Instead of singing hymns, she wooed men with her beauty and naïve charm.

The warnings fell on deaf ears.
He loved her unconditionally. And as he tried to unravel what was behind that beautiful structure only to see behind that smile and sun-kiss locks. The young boy saw something, however it wasn't what he expected to see.
Dan braced himself for the worse; ignoring the kept secrets, rumors, the unsure looks and held her tight whenever he embraced her. He can still remember the fresh scent of summer embedded in her hair and skin.
His conscious denied the space growing between them.
One night Dan placed his hands on her shoulders, observing her smile from a safe distance and told her 'I love you'. She blinked and the space became infinite.

The second girl was a train wreck you couldn't look away from. Such a gorgeous disaster just waiting to be happen.
She cover herself in treasures that he thought never existed; she had a smile that hid daggers, gifted with intelligence and determination but cursed with stubbornness, her touch was seductive and her lips were intoxicating. There was no mystery to be solve when Dan was with her unlike the statue. Sadly...
'I love you'
She nodded, "Okay."
The spoiled bitch took his heart and never gave it back. Leaving Dan with his writing and make-believe to compose any humanity he had left.

Finally after failing one too many times, Dan started to understand the concept that baffle millions of people to this very day. This love cause nothing but trouble. Saying those three words was the same as having sex, it fucks everything up. So from this point on he told himself he'll live a life as a clergy, his mind and soul dedicated to his religion which was writing.

(There was a time when Dan dated his close friend, but that doesn't count.)

He literally screwed himself over when he fell in love for the third time.

Dan was going through the normal notions in his life and hidden beneath the gestures and conversations, within his forgotten heart an unfamiliar feeling erupted. When he realize what was happening-it was too late.
Soon Dan grew anxious and excited when ever that person came near him. A slight touch, a brush of a hand, or a slight whisper in his ear and Dan will feel boneless and melt into a small puddle. If only he can crawl out of his flush skin when that person was so close he could smell the hint of cologne and sea salt.
But with all the people he could want to kiss endlessly, why his best friend?

One day he sat in the fire escape near his bedroom window next t that person. In the beginning an idea suggested that they should spend the afternoon getting high and enjoying the calm silence in Brooklyn.
Maybe it was after the second or third blunt when the Twilight Zone began-Dan doesn't remember.
Through the glossy eyes and uncontrollable chuckles the boy beside Dan blurted out a 'I love you'.
"Wow, you are high."
"I'm serious." He exhaled.
Dan rubbed his eyes and looked back at the person. For a second there he did look serious.
"You don't have to say anything right now, I'm just letting you know. 'Kay?"
In his mind this was nothing more than a trick. In his heart this was a proclamation, "O-Okay."
