This one is thanks to
squirrela.  Apologies for playing fast and loose with timing, but for the purposes of this dialogue, both girls are of a similar age.

Joey Bettany dropped down into the chair and sat staring out over the lawn of the Chalet School.  She was worried, really worried.  After several years ruling the roost, she risked losing it all to this new girl.  Granted, Susan Pevensie had something of an attitude, but, point for point, she was streets ahead.

"My parents both died when I was very young, you know,"  she stated.

"Well my father is away fighting in the war, which is more psychologically traumatic in many ways" replied Susan, "and my mother sent us all away to stay with strangers in the country.  A weird old professor who knew nothing about children!  You've been here with your beloved elder sister, surrounded by people qualified in teaching and experienced in dealing with young girls.  That counts for a lot, you know."

"Yes...but you got to have an exciting adventure with talking animals and a wicked Queen.  All we have is Bill.  There are similarities, I grant you, but it's just not the same."

"Exciting adventures?  Yeah, great!  But we almost drowned in a stretch of icy water!  Do you have ANY concept what that can do to your chest?  I was coughing for days afterwards!"

Joey looked at her with cold eyes.  "I have some experience, yes.  Did you have to use the bronchitis kettle?"

"The what??  Bronchitis kettle?  Sounds like something you made up", Susan retorted.  "We didn't have time for medical treatment.  Straight on from there and into battle.  Good job I had my bow and arrows, and the magic horn."

Joey frowned.  Bow and arrows?  Blimey.  She could barely strap on a pair of ice-skates unaided.  Then she had an inspired thought.

"I was written by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer!  She wrote over sixty books about my school, plus a whole stack of other fiction.  She has fan clubs, a website, thousands of fans AND has inspired rather a lot of fanfic, don't you know?"  She sat back, satisfied.

Susan laughed pityingly.

"Elinor M, Brent-Dyer?  Whatever.  Ever heard of C.S. Lewis?  Worked on Christian apologetics, medieval literature, literary criticism and wrote a huge amount of fiction?  Friend of J.R.R. Tolkein, fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford?  Stick old EBD into Google and you get just over 600 hits.  Type in C S Lewis and wa-hey!  Over 2.2 million!  I rest my case."

Joey pulled a face.  If she wasn't much mistaken, nothing less than a bout of pneumonia was going to do it.  Bugger.
