Spike Bugs; Bugs of Spike

Sep 06, 2012 23:43

Okay, so...

Anyone know who said that the Spike bugs was a representation of Spike fans?  Did a writer say that, or was it speculation?

In other news, I read the latest Angel & Faith comic and...well

spoiler...but probably not since I'm one of the last to read this. )

spike, angel & faith comic, fandom, spike fans, comics

I can't remember who said it. But in the latest previews, it strikes me that they're drawing a really blatant analogy between Spike's one-sided relationship with Buffy and the bugs' one-sided relationship with Spike.

Ah...interesting. Bugs, bots and Buff's, huh? God, I wish they'd get a new tune :p

I actually kind of liked it, as it means the writer is at least aware of the fact that Spike is often shown treating the bugs in ways that could be taken to mean that he sees them as expendable minions.

Didn't he get protective of them with the bug zompire and when Simone was trying to shoot them or something? I'm not as close a follower as most are with these comics, but I thought the perception given was that they weren't just expendable minions?

Anyway, if that's the direction they're going to take it in now as a Bot/Harmony replacement and mirror to his and Buffy's relationship...no, I don't think I'll dig it. Well honestly, it's tough to dig as is :P

Did any of that make sense? I'm tired and about to go to my beddy-bye, so I am not sure.

In that scene, yes, but the way Spike treats the bugs varies from issue to issue. I think most of the writers just see them as expendable cannon fodder or comic relief, so it's not surprising when the characters do. I mean, what with being identical and looking like critters that most humans find repulsive, it's like the audience is being encouraged not to care when they get slaughtered in mass quantities. (I strongly suspect that if certain people weren't really invested in finding new ways that Spike is a terrible person, they wouldn't care about the bugs being 'mistreated' at all.)

I strongly suspect you're right.

Spike has been shown to care about the bugs to some extent. He took the trouble to give them names and he seems to be able to tell one from the other. And, in fact, he's no ruder to the than he is to other people.

None of this has any weight, though, with those determined to use the bugs to further prove their contention that Spike is a representation of a white male colonial oppressor, or whatever.
