So we had planned to spend a little bit over a week to take a trip to England this spring. That would exhaust all of our my vacation time and a good chunk of
vanderbolt's...but we've really been thinking that we need a trip together for awhile and our next long distance trip was totally pegged to be to England where Matt studied in undergrad for a semester.
So taking advantage of some very low rates on flights, my husband booked our trip. I posted in an LJ ps that were going over the pond and that the planning had yet to begin.
Enter a Friday afternoon phone call from my darling spouse.
HIM: (nervously) "What were the dates that I sent you via email for our trip to England?"
ME: (a bit surprised) "March 27 to April 6."
HIM: (slightly paniked) "I thought so...um..."
ME: (concerned) "What's up?"
HIM: (so terribly sad) "I just checked and the tickets have us returning on April 13."
ME: (confused) "Huh?!"
The conversation continued with my husband voluntarily feeling like a heel for the booking error and me attempting a practical triage of to attempt to address the issue presented.
So after calling the airline and the trip insurance company, checking my time card to remind myself exactly how many hours of vacation I actually have, and doing a rather loose cost benefit analysis of the cost of changing the flight vs the cost of going for a longer trip...I emailed my boss.
ME: Can I borrow vacation time from the future, use sick time for my extra vacation OR, take an unpaid leave (the leave is cheaper out of my pocket than the change of ticket fee for both of us).
MY BOSS: We can work this out, no problem. Have fun spending two weeks in England!
I love my work place.
And so...off we go! If you've been to England, especially Southern England, please share any thoughts you have on must sees or must dos!
PS. Now I *really* have no vacation time left for most of 2009.
