Wow.
Movies.
Movies on which my opinions are not what I thought they would be.
Goblet of Fire: My initial reaction? The third one was better. Well actually my inital reaction was MAN the boys of Harry Potter have grown up. ::clears throat.:: But THEN I thought the third one was better. A better movie, more artistic, more character driven, more coherent. I had a religious experience when I saw the third HP movie, so I was disspointed with this one. Then I saw GoF again. And LOVED it. For some reason my first experience with it was not bad by any means, but not nearly as fantastic as before. Well I still like the third one best, but I really do enjoy the fourth movie now. I've seen it 4 times already. The quoting has begun.
Rent: Ok. Despite what most people probably believe, I do not love the musical RENT. In fact I tried to like the show when it first came out, and actively DISLIKED it. I tried again on and off for years after, trying to see what the fuss was about. I thought the lyrics were trite, and the attempt at being "bohemian" went a bit far. Everyone's drugged up, everyone has aids, and the lesson is "Well you can't control how things will end up, live life. It's all good." A good lesson in general-- but the part about not being able to control what happens is the flaw. Be yourself yes. Love who you want to love and don't listen to crap about it. Of course. Experiment. I'm all for it. Yay college. But throwing all caution to the wind cause you're eventually going to die anyway? How about Angel killing the puppy? And Collins "rewiring the ATM" so it could be robbed? Both things done and relayed with a smile and a song. It made me a lot less sympathetic to the characters. Without those types of things that make the characters seem immature and stupid instead of free, open and intelligent, I think I would have loved the show. I appreciated the romantic connections and many of the characters' traits. But then they go and mar it. In La Vie Boheme they say "To anything Taboo." That's how I feel about RENT. ANYTHING unhealthy or anti-establishment they are for, but for no reason other than to be able to say that. There is some merit in having fun and living life to the fullest without consistently putting yourself or your loved ones in danger. BUT...
I loved the movie.
I sobbed my eyes out. I haven't cried like that in a movie for a long time. I really really loved it. All the flaws were still there, but I loved it. I had so much respect for the fact that it was almost the entire original cast, and they were all fucking fantastic. And Rosario Dawson was a good addition-- her voice is mediocre but she acted the role wonderfully. And JoAnne was AWESOME. It was just so good, in spite of all the things I find trite about it. Huh. Who knew.
So I'll be seeing that about 76 times.
Anyway, I'm off to sleep for the first time in 5 days.
Love,
Jessica
"AIDS" From Team America: World Police. It is the closing number of the show "LEASE," featured in the movie. Trey Parker and MAtt Stone are geniuses. This song is gloriously innapropriate-- yet so appropriate to the show it mocks.
"AIDS AIDS AIDS.
Everyone has aids.
AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS.
Everyone has AIDS.
And now everyone is dead from Aids.
It took away my best friend.
My only true pal.
My only bright star.
