I was entertained. Some of the action was so overblown that I found it alienating, rather than exciting (the chase sequence in the Goblin Caves, the ride on Stone Giant legs;) but to make up for that, PJ gave the dwarves a lot of gravitas they don't have in the books, which made their goals and battles more engaging. The hat doesn't suit Ian at all - he looks much better without it. The 3D and framerate worked well for me, although I know others differ.
The riddle scene, pretty much the lynch-pin of the whole movie, is done perfectly; also, exactly as in the book. Speaking of perfection: Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins. The actors of the dwarves inhabit their characters well; the tone is light, but not frivolous or ridiculous. The Singing of the Dwarves is brilliantly done, shiver-down-the-spine stuff. These aren't Disney dwarves.
I await the next episode with anticipation, and am glad it's only a year off.
