Prometheus

I wonder if the movie was subjected to a studio hack job like Bladerunner was? Some of the scenes just don't seem to follow on properly from each other; the whole thing was somewhat incoherent.

The apparent protagonists are painted as archaeologists, but act more like Von Daniken cultists who lucked onto something that matched their pet theories to a first-order approximation. The minor characters are even worse, and all of them act not just stupidly, but unbelievably stupidly to push the plot along.

David is more interesting, perhaps because he could be interpreted as acting out of deep or alien motives, rather than plot stupidity.

It's a very pretty film with awesome vistas, interesting technology, and vaguely plausible and interesting nonhumans. It asks big questions, yet it's hard to be clear whether the undercurrent of nihilism is intended to undermine those questions or not.

The 3d is not necessary to enjoy the film - in fact they misuse it to spoil the space scenes, by making the planets pop against the starry background - human eyes are nowhere near far apart enough for that to work, it just makes the scene look toy-like.

In the end... I'd like to watch this movie again - but I certainly won't shell out any more money for the privilege.
