The Horrors
AvP 2: The Requiem. The eponymous monsters hunt each other across a small town; the requisite blood and thunder with folksy folks getting caught in the middle. Pretty much what you'd expect, but more fun and more plausible than the previous AvP due to the realistic locale.
1408: Writer stays the night in haunted hotels, but meets his match. Makes something of a virtue of Mr King's apparent difficulty with ending a story. Very traditional King in that the horror starts small but soon escalates to surreal levels. Tugs at heart-strings enough that you keep empathising with the main character despite the wild things going on around him; also keeps you guessing at how much of what you see is really happening.
