Dark Critters Overload
Black Snake Moan: I found this movie rather enchanting, if rather screwy. It certainly doesn’t hurt that it has Christina Ricci at her most athletic and least dressed, and we all know that Samuel L. Jackson can act. Surprisingly, so can Justin Timberlake showing no sign of rock-star ego in an unflattering role. All the main characters are somewhat broken by life. Part character piece, part love story, part blues celebration, and surprisingly lacking in prurience.
Fails Mo Movie test (#3)
Black Sheep: There’s a lot of gore, but fairly few scares in this black comedy/horror. There have been comparisons to Bad Taste, but this is really a more professional work. Is it funny? Yeah. And I’m not a big low-humour fan. But I wish they’d tried to scare me a bit harder, because I think finding yourself really packing it when you know what’s scaring you is totally ridiculous to be incredibly funny, and I don’t think they took advantage of that. Still, it’s a great fun film.
