You know, for all I've railed against Robert, I do actually feel he's entitled to be displeased with Richard, disappointed in Mary, and concerned about how well this marriage will work out in the future--what father wouldn't feel all of those things?--so I'm glad you think his position's come through here. As for Carson, I think he feels exactly the same way and might be inclined to shoot Richard himself if he'd come into possession of one of the hunting rifles. ;) I'm dying to get his honest opinions in somewhere...maybe I'll find a way yet.
So pleased you mentioned Edith, as well, because you seem to be reading my mind with regard to her. Hopefully what I have planned for her wont' be totally predictable. ;)
Mummy-in-law to come soon! Along with the American relatives. :D
Thank you so so much for your thoughtful comments!

Carson made me sniffle a bit here. If he can forgive Mary for this, as concerned with propriety as he, he really must love her.
And it's nice to see Robert being concerned, if a little belatedly, for Mary's happiness -- but props to Mary for reminding him that her happiness hasn't always been his first concern...
Love the little touch of humor at the end of the chapter. In a way, it shows that Robert's rage is cooling a bit.
I hope I'll be able to keep reading on schedule as the last few chapters go up! This has been a gripping plot, with lots of marvelous character moments.

So glad you liked all the character moments here--Robert is slowly being worn down, hehe. And Carson's feelings about Richard may eventually come out, if I can find a good place for them to do so....
Just, thank you so much for this marathon read and for all your lovely comments about the chapters. I hope you're able to read as I post, too--next update will be next week, since Thanksgiving has left me with little writing time and I'm actually struggling a bit with the chapter. Though I think I've more or less wrestled it into submission now...
