Ista sighed, shook her head, and set aside the parchment she had been reading. Or rather, trying to read. She'd tried everything--brighter candles, waiting until the light of midday, holding it farther away from her face, holding it closer…even a seeing glass--but still couldn't make out a word of it.
She refused to consider the possibility that she was getting old.
With one final, resolute rub of her weary eyes, she blinked away the bleariness and took up her pen and a fresh sheet of parchment.
My dear Lord Chancellor dy Cazaril, she wrote, in her most careful penmanship, Have you installed one of those damnable birds as your secretary? Only when it comes to your last missive, he expression chicken scrawl comes to mind. Please be so good as to convey the information again, as I was unable to make out a word of it. Royina Iselle has a fine, clear hand; perhaps you could employ her as your official letter-writer, if she has no other business than ruling her country to occupy her time.
