This little piggy read Harry Potter...

May 10, 2007 06:35

I've never really done a theory post before, and it just figures the first time I do I'd have a totally wacky one that wasn't even started by my own original thought. The idea took hold, though, and I can't get it out now. Brace yourselves for symbolism discussions with Tater, who was always known for writing very strange papers in college about ( Read more... )

LOL Thank you for that generous grade! It's been so long since I wrote an essay, I was terrified of getting a B or worse! ;)

*randomly jumps into your journal* haha.

Wow... I only have one more thing to add to that amazing train of thought:

A male BADGER is a BOAR. HAHA, LOL. We discussed this a lot over at a community I'm a part of, because we (Hufflepuff) recently won the House Cup over there (woo, go us :D), and I was rallying people with the whole "2007 is the Golden year of the Boar (which is a male badger, LOLOLOL)" HAHA. Hence, the icon ;) :D

I'm adding this to my memories. I think you're onto something! AND I'm currently drawing Tonks with her patronus before it was Moony, and I WAS going to have it as a bunch of butterflies, but now I'm changing it. LOL. :D

I'm going to add you to my friends btw, because I think you are just absolutely made of awesome. :D

Peace,
Rotae

Oh! Coincidence! I was going to pop over to your journal and ask to friend you because I found your R/T art at Deviant Art yesterday and I love it! And will you do more, please? :)

That is really interesting about male badgers being called boars! I never knew that. Are there other similarities between pigs and badgers? They sort of nose around in the dirt, don't they? LOL

Mostly I did this for fun, but I've sold myself on giving Tonks a pig Patronus. I'd gone with chameleons before, but lots of people go that route, and I wanted something different for my fic endeavors...A squiggly-tailed pig it is for Miss Tonks the Hufflepuff!

Welcome aboard. There's lots of nuttiness at this journal. :)

THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES IN THE WORLD OF JKR!! LOL. :D

HAHA! That's why I randomly jumped into your journal! I just thanked you over @ dA for the favourites!! LOL. SPOOKY... 0.o Will I do more Remus/Tonks?! Are you serious?! YOU JUST TRY AND STOP ME!! HAHA. It's my OTP <33

Yeah! It was really weird how I found out about it as well... there was this REALLY dodgy old Scottish movie on TV @ about 2am one morning. And there was this kid at school, and he was learning about all the differeny male/female names for the animals... and they said badger and my head whipped up, LOL, and it was boar and I thought, "WAIT. Isn't it the YEAR of the GOLDEN BOAR this year?!" And got all excited and went to gush to my Hufflepuff friends... ^^; LOL. I am far too excitable. :D

I had my heart said on butterfiles, but you've totally made me a convert. LOL. Look out for my Tonks+Piggy soon ;) :D

Oh snap. Well... mine's more spaz than nuttiness... together we're a nutty spaz? Or a spazzy nut? LOL ;) *huggles*

Peace,
Rotae

I think butterflies really suit Tonks. But I'll really look forward to seeing the Piggy!Patronus!

You, my dear, are nuts. 100% crazy.

That said...

This is a very interesting theory. You have marshaled your evidence well. JKR has used a great deal of symbolism and zodiac/personality type stuff before so it fits with her M.O., though I think her symbolism is usually more open and ovious than this. You've still got more evidence than a lot of popular fanon out there. I'd say until JKR says otherwise, run with this!

I am very pleased to be labeled crazy by you. I think life would be very boring and I wouldn't write as well if I weren't a bit nutty. Or a lot nutty, which is really the case.

And I'm very pleased to have your stamp of approval on the argument, as well, you ABD Doctor Brat, you. ;)

I'll agree with you there. It took quite a lot of nosing around to come up with what I found on this, and it's a whole lot of things pulled together. But still, it's an idea I like for my own edification, at least!

Some of your reasoning is slightly nutty - but you still have me sold on the idea.

All I needed was the Chinese and Korean zodiac descriptions and the Tonks pig snout and you had me. I love the idea of the "little pig" patronus being blown away by the wolf.

Very clever work, Tater. I'm looking forward to R/T writers everywhere jumping on the bandwagon and a plethora of piggy-patronus fics popping up. ;)

Hee! That was what I loved about being an English major: taking a totally bizarre side on something, coming up with the support for it, and then making a professor say, "I want to disagree, but you're very convincing." I kind of miss that in a formal capacity, so it's nice to have HP as an outlet for that part of me!

Aren't those zodiac descriptions just perfect for her? I love stuff like that. Though I'm getting very strange visuals, like a music video, of pig Patronuses running away from wolves, and Tonks morphing pig snouts...

Once again, I'm really flattered that you found my idea intriguing. Thanks!

They are most compatible with Rabbits and Sheep.

I suppose now would be a good time to invite you to take a look at my rabbit essay:

It won't be altogether clear in spots unless you know a little more about the meta-theory a friend and I have been brainstorming for literally years now. However, that lies way outside the scope of this particular subject, so if you'd like to continue talking about whether pigs have wings and if there is potentially greater significance to the phrase "the rabbit died," I'd be happy to take it private somehow, whether by email or through owls at CoS.

Oh wow, thanks for that link. I've only just had time to skim your essay, but it looks really well-supported. And you know what? I think a rabbit could be a Patronus for Remus. He'd really cling to James' casual, light-hearted view of his condition.

Ooh, there's such a plot bunny (hee -- how appropriate!) in this!!

Thanks. We're the first to admit that our ideas are extremely unorthodox when compared to the mainline of thought in HP fandom, but we are nothing if not sticklers for canon -- at least as we interpret it.

I've never really settled on a Patronus for Remus, mostly because I find it difficult to guess at what specific symbolism JKR would intend to connect to him through it. However, it may interest you to know that in the mythology of Japan, India and other cultures world-wide, the moon is closely linked with rabbits or hares, usually as an explanation for what its craters depict. So perhaps a Rabbit Patronus is at least a viable possibility for Lupin.

Check this out! How Remus is this -- or the sort of thing Remus would put trust in:

Hares (rabbits) are happiest when with friends and safely inside of social circles. They are often meek and withdrawn among groups of strangers. They seldom like to argue and enjoy quiet, peaceful lives. A Hare is cautious and will weigh the pros and cons from every angle before moving ahead ( ... )
