This little piggy read Harry Potter...

I've never really done a theory post before, and it just figures the first time I do I'd have a totally wacky one that wasn't even started by my own original thought. The idea took hold, though, and I can't get it out now. Brace yourselves for symbolism discussions with Tater, who was always known for writing very strange papers in college about ( Read more... )

Once again, I'm really flattered that you found my idea intriguing. Thanks!

They are most compatible with Rabbits and Sheep.

I suppose now would be a good time to invite you to take a look at my rabbit essay:

It won't be altogether clear in spots unless you know a little more about the meta-theory a friend and I have been brainstorming for literally years now. However, that lies way outside the scope of this particular subject, so if you'd like to continue talking about whether pigs have wings and if there is potentially greater significance to the phrase "the rabbit died," I'd be happy to take it private somehow, whether by email or through owls at CoS.

Oh wow, thanks for that link. I've only just had time to skim your essay, but it looks really well-supported. And you know what? I think a rabbit could be a Patronus for Remus. He'd really cling to James' casual, light-hearted view of his condition.

Ooh, there's such a plot bunny (hee -- how appropriate!) in this!!

Thanks. We're the first to admit that our ideas are extremely unorthodox when compared to the mainline of thought in HP fandom, but we are nothing if not sticklers for canon -- at least as we interpret it.

I've never really settled on a Patronus for Remus, mostly because I find it difficult to guess at what specific symbolism JKR would intend to connect to him through it. However, it may interest you to know that in the mythology of Japan, India and other cultures world-wide, the moon is closely linked with rabbits or hares, usually as an explanation for what its craters depict. So perhaps a Rabbit Patronus is at least a viable possibility for Lupin.

Check this out! How Remus is this -- or the sort of thing Remus would put trust in:

Hares (rabbits) are happiest when with friends and safely inside of social circles. They are often meek and withdrawn among groups of strangers. They seldom like to argue and enjoy quiet, peaceful lives. A Hare is cautious and will weigh the pros and cons from every angle before moving ahead ( ... )

Another legend has it that the Hare possesses the secret recipe for the elixir of immortality.

Um, yeesss, especially since the word "elixir" literally means "Philosopher's Stone".... (Sorry to be so vague, but I'm beginning to feel distinctly uncomfortable about delving any deeper into some of this, er, stuff on a publicly read blog, especially since there is a very slim chance that my friend and I may try for some sort of publication of our theory as an actual book of analysis after DH is released, should we turn out to be close to the truth.)

Philosopher's Stone had occurred to me, as well.

Would you like to take this private, or would you like to keep your thoughts totally secret? I'd be happy to go email if you'd like.

I'd love to! It's been a while since I've done any hard-core analysis of anything. :)

I believe the Hare is already taken. Luna's Patronus in the OotP movie is a Hare with JK's blessing. Though it certainly would work for Remus as well. :)

Well you know my other crack theory is that somehow they have a connection because at some point in the books they're each derisively dubbed Loony. Loony Lupin by Peeves and Loony Luna by her housemates...
