I can't believe Julie will be going home in two short days. It seems like she has been at St. Jude forever, and still time has passed so quickly. When I look back at my journal and see how far she has progressed it is remarkable. A few months ago she was not even moving her right hand at all, and now she uses it as her primary hand again. Today we hosted a party for the staff in the rehab unit and Julie was the star of the show- she had her picture taken at least 15 times, with all the different staff, from her therapists, the nurses, aids and even her neurologist. She got to eat cake and pizza, grapes and strawberries. She also had some delicious brownies that Lauren had made- which she enjoyed several times throughout the day- including around 3 pm when she usually has a healthy snack- today was chocolate themed snack, and she enjoyed more brownie, some chocolate cake, chocolate nutrition drink and even some chocolate cream pie. The pie was basic hospital food, and was her least favorite, but at least it was in keeping with the theme.
A couple of really cool things that happened today:
In speech therapy today she was asked what she did at home yesterday for her visit and for the first time since her accident she was able to remember and articulate what happened. She said she saw a dog.
In recreational therapy she played UNO, and was able to differentiate the numbers, colors and won two hands!!!
Today Julie was moved to a different room at the hospital, as she has been in a double room the whole time and they had new patients coming in who needed the space. She is now in a small single room until she goes home on Wednesday.
