Kekkon Dekinai Otokono Ep 01: 一人が好きで悪いか!! / So what if I like to be alone?!
So I have here for you the first episode and screencaps from one of the many summer j-doramas i am watching. This first one is called "Kekkon Dekinai Otokono". Which is titled "The Man who cannot get married". Though, i really think it's not really that he can't ..... more that he does not want to.
It's basically about this over 40 architect,[Kuwano} who is an "otaku" (and i mean in the broad japanese sense of the term..as in Geek. not anime Otaku) and accidentally meets a mid/late 30s female doctor[hayasaka], who is also not married. They both have nothing in common and hate each other. Of course, we know where it is leading to...but the script does not focus on the building relationship, as much as it addresses the fact that these two individuals CHOSE to live a married-free life. For Kuwano..it's a burden. For Hayasaka it is about love. It also, for me, being in my thirties now, gives an interesting look into, what is most likely, a "rare" aspect of japanese society: being over thirty and single.
I know my friend Yukiko tells me how, when she was married at 25, she was considered old. it feels this signifies a paradigmal shift in Japanese society, albeit not the norm, but times are a changin'; and, it is interesting to see that most of the jdoramas i am watching this summer, are focusing on this aspect of women not married, who are nearing or in their thirties. i find it encouraging to see that Japanese television creates a refreshing and creative approach, and not adding to the sterotypes (like they do here in American TV).
This is what endears me to Kekkon. Kuwano is NOT the "stereotypical" over-40 single male: the playboy. Both Kuwano and Hayasaka are married to their work, to some respect. But, more importantly they are married to their individuality and sense of self. There IS a character that represents the stereotypical older "playboy"... .It is another architect Kaneda. You see how he trapses from woman to woman, touting his wealth and living the jet-set life. But, you have little respect for the character and find him quite aloof.
You will laugh your ass off with this jdorama...okay maybe not a constant laugh your ass off....but it's HIGLY amusing and entertaining.
You gotta love a jdorama that starts off it's first episode with the character having his ass probed on his birthday. Too funny. Not to mention, in a recent ep, Kuwano is getting ANALY serious while constructing this model ship..then lo and behold ...you start to hear Celine Dion's Theme song to the titanic...and close-up up on Kuwano surgically placing Jack & "what's her name?" at the helm of the ship. TOO FUNNY!.
