What a farce

My mom tried to call me last night and, thinking back on it today, it reminds me of the play Noises Off without the slamming doors. I was on my exercise bike when she called the first time. It's difficult for me to dismount and get across the living room floor because I am a terrible housekeeper and there are many tripping hazards, so I didn't reach the kitchen phone until she'd left a message on the answering machine and hung up. I retrieved my cellphone on the way back to the exercise bike and called back. I got her voicemail and left a message. She called back, again on the house phone, and once again I couldn't get to it fast enough. That time I took the house phone back to my exercise bike, but returned the call using my cellphone. Voicemail again. I waited a few seconds, tried again, and ended up in her voicemail once more. Not wanting to call again and hoping she'd call either number, I sent her a text saying "Call my cell" and giving her that number. She normally calls my cell, so why she picked the house phone last night remains a mystery.

We eventually connected and then had a laugh over the ridiculousness. She mostly wanted to check in and let me know that she's not recovering from her surgery as fast as she wants. I had to reassure her that being tired after getting up and walking around is normal, as is not being able to walk long distances yet. She can make it from her room to the dining hall and I think that's quite an accomplishment after being wheelchair bound for more than year.

The surgery cured her hip pain, and hopefully slowly increasing her activity level will get her back to where she wants to be.
