Thanks to my wonderful beta
plingo_kat Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love is patient
“Ianto Jones! Get your cute butt up here now,” Jack shouted irritably through the comm. He sat down and aimlessly tapped against his leg. Tap-tap-tap-beat-tap-tap-tap-beat…on and on until Ianto staggered through the door.
“Sir?” he wheezed out, leaning heavily on the desk.
“Shut the door.” he commanded, knowing rather than seeing his team eavesdropping. When Ianto stood in front of his desk yet again, Jack slowly turned his chair around. “What has a guy gotta do to get some lovin’?” Jack whispered, pulling Ianto down onto his lap and filling his senses with the adorable Welshman.
Love is kind
“You like to think you’re a hero - but you’re the biggest monster of all.”
Love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.
“So you wanna go someplace quieter?” the man reached out and placed a hand on top of Ianto’s.
“Excuse me-” Jack thumped him. Hard.
“Jack!” Ianto gasped, bending down to inspect the damage done. Nothing broken, just a bruised lip. “What did you do that for?”
“You don’t need him - you have me,” he grinned cockily and held out a hand, which was ignored.
“Jack, You - you left me and now you’re jealous?”
“No. Not jealous, just-”
“You’re jealous - you’re actually jealous,” Ianto laughed as he finally held out his hand to his Captain.
It does not insist on its own way
“You brought this down on us. You hid her. You hid yourself from us. Now it's time for you to stand as part of the team.” Jack’s face was a picture of anger, though deep in his eyes was betrayal.
Gwen reached out and touched Jack’s shoulder, willing him to lower the gun.
“Jack ...” It didn’t happen.
”The girl you loved has gone. Your loyalty is to us now.” he whispered in Ianto's ear, the gun finding itself closer to the Welshman's face.
”You can't order me to do that,” Ianto replied, his face full of regret. Regret for Jack. Regret for Lisa. And regret for himself.
“You execute her or I'll execute you both!” Jack growled, shoving the gun closer
It is not irritable
Gwen came out the office, her head hanging low and her cheeks flushed in embarrassment.
“I was right, wasn’t I?” Owen gloated, holding out his hand for payment. Gwen fished in her pockets and handed over a £10 note.
Uncharacteristically grinning, Ianto slowly made his way over to Jack’s office, bearing a steaming cup of fresh coffee.
“I told you he would know Ianto hadn’t made it - I’ve been here two years and you,” Owen sized her up. “You’ve been here barely two days - you know nothing.”
“Reports on my desk by two o’clock!” Jacks voice boomed from the office before the door was slammed shut. The others groaned.
Or resentful
“It worked! -- What happened to…?” Tosh asked running up from the front of Torchwood. Jack shook his head, brushing the question aside.
“No.” he panted. Ianto glared at Jack, anger evident in his every movement. Putting every ounce of the anger and betrayal he felt into it, he punched Jack. He punched him hard.
”You could have saved her!” Ianto screamed, trying to get in another shot before being held back by Gwen. If he wanted to he could easily have get past her. But he’d wait for now. Let the older man suffer.
“Argh.” Owen held back Jack as he moved to reciprocate the punch.
”You're worse than anything locked up down there! One day, I'll have the chance to save you ... and I'll watch you suffer and die.”
“It was the only thing that would stop her!” Jack cried, desperate to justify himself.
It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth
“I’m not a fucking tea-boy,” Ianto spat out angrily before storming away.
“You had it coming,” Tosh muttered, glancing at Owen and then getting back to work. Owen struggled to sit himself up.
“Fuck, he’s got one hell of a right hook,” he groaned as he stood up, the world swimming in front of his eyes.
“Call him that again and you’ll be retconned out on your ass!” Jack said moving from his office over to Owen’s desk. He fingered Owen’s already bruised face. “Though by the looks of things-” he paused looking around. “You’d better watch your coffee.” and with that he walked back again.
It bears all things
“Jack!” Tosh cried exasperated.
“I know too much.” he whispered just loud enough to be heard.
“Then ... share.” Tosh asked quietly, scared he’ll bottle up again.
“You wouldn't want that. Trust me,” he paused and looked at Tosh. “We have to get back. What's in here?”
Believes all things
“She calls them fairies. I don't.” Jack said bluntly.
”What do you call them?” Gwen asked curiously. Jack was a never-ending fountain of knowledge.
”They've never really had a proper name,” he explained, frowning.
“Why not?”
“Something from the dawn of time - how could you possibly put a name to that?” he asked rhetorically, knowing that Gwen would continue.
“Are we talking alien?”
”Worse.”
”How come?”
“Because they're part of us, part of our world, yet we know nothing about them. So we pretend to know what they look like. We see them as happy. We imagine they have tiny little wings and are bathed in moonlight,” he gestured with his hands, explaining as simply as he could.
“But they're not?” she asked to clarify.
”No. Think dangerous, think something you can only half see like a glimpse, like something out of the corner of your eye with a touch of myth, a touch of the spirit world, a touch of reality, all jumbled together,” he stops and they face each other, an intense look on Jack’s face.
”Old moments and memories that are frozen in amongst it. Like debris spinning around a ringed planet - tossing, turning, whirling. Then backwards and forwards through time. If that's them we have to find them...before all hell breaks loose,” he finishes, walking off quickly and not giving Gwen another look in.
Hopes all things
“When I was younger - much younger, I used to think that I’d never get married or settle down. I never had a reason to believe that my antics would stop. I was a naive 20 year old who had the whole world at his disposal until I lost two years. Slept my way through half the galaxy and conned the rest, but then I met a man and a woman. Such an amazing pair, and they changed my life…”
“Who were they?” he asks, drawing circles on Jack’s rising and falling chest.
“My Doctor. My Rose.”
“What happened then?” he asks curiously, sitting up next to Jack.
“I died. They left me. Then there was you.” He paused stroking the younger man’s hair. “My Ianto,” he whispered softly against the warm, comforting lips brought against his own.
Endures all things
“This building belongs to me now. You will all be deleted-” Jack stepped in front of Lisa. She turned her attention to him.
“I'm sorry for what they did to you. But this ends here.” he said gruffly. Suddenly she grabs Jack by his neck and zaps him. He screams, and he screams loud…

CRASH!
The large grey tractor bursts through the double doors. Evan ducks out the way as it stops in the middle of the kitchen.
Before any one can do anything, Jack appears with a rifle and shoots Evan in the leg, giving the same treatment to anyone standing up. His team ducks to avoid getting hit…
---
‘Toshiko ... Don't move. Don't do anything until I say.’ concentrating, Jack speaks directly to Tosh, his thoughts finally being the ones she hears.
“Please,” she begs.
“Okay, you want the transporter, we want Toshiko. I think that’s a fair swap.”
‘I've been trained for hostage situations ... For God's sake, Gwen, think!’ Gwen thinks, beating herself up.
“Keep the knife and I'll give you the transporter myself.” Jack offers, knowing that she will give in as he holds out the transporter for Mary…
---
“Doctors reckon you can go home.” Jack tells the mauled Owen.
”Doctors. What do they know, eh?” he scoffs. “I didn't want saving,”
“You want us to apologize?” he asks, his voice lowering dangerously.
”For a few seconds in that cage, I felt totally at peace. And then you blunder in. Do you always know best, Jack? Is that what you believe?” Owen asks, his voice on the edge of breaking.
“I want you back at work tomorrow.” he replies before turning and leaving…
---
“What are you going to do?” Gwen asks, suddenly scared. There’s a manic look in Jack’s eyes.
“If Abaddon is the bringer of death, let's see how he does with me. If he feeds on life, then I'm an all-you-can-eat buffet.” he replies, pushing her away. He had been waiting for this moment, ever since…

Ianto wonders what he’s done when Tosh runs off, away from him towards the entrance of the Hub. He turns around and Jack is there. Jack’s alive. He sees them hug.
Ianto stands up and walks, trance-like, over to Jack. Not knowing what to do in front of the others, he awkwardly holds his hand out, but Jack grabs him and they hug. Before he knows it, they’re kissing.
This is more than a part-time shag. He is more than a part-time shag. And now he knows.
