Winter had always been the harshest season of the year: bone-biting wind coming off over the Bay, ice cold sleet and rain drumming down continuously, and temperatures dropping well below freezing on most days. Jack loved the Earth winter, something about there being no winter back home, and absolutely adored the rare dusting of snow that occasionally settled over Cardiff, making the sharp lines of the city somehow seem softer and almost sparkling in the rare winter sunshine. Ianto would often bring a steaming mug of coffee up to the Captain, standing on the roof of the Millennium Stadium, and just stand with him in silence listening to the muffled sounds of day-to-day-life. Nobody knew of the dangers that lurked in dark corners, in the sewers, under the ground they walked on everyday - and nobody cared until there was a thirty foot beast striding over Cardiff and killing everybody in it's looming shadow.
Then Jack was gone, with not a word of explanation. They didn't know where, if he'd be taken against his will or gone freely - there was nothing to do but wait, and wait and wait, until winter started to appear. The coming of winter seemed to close the deal somehow. Christmas had come and gone with the blink of an eye, and New Year was merely a haze of fireworks and forced celebrations. The last of the brief snow fall was disappearing, the shadows hiding the remaining snow drifts before the sun could catch and melt them. The world was starting to get itself back into shape, but the Captain's absence carved gaps in their hearts and work remained unfilled.
