Its been two weeks since the third season finale of Lost. I had planned on writing my review of "Through the Looking Glass" right after it aired, but I had so many people contacting me, asking hundreds of questions about the critically acclaimed season finale that I just needed a break from thinking about Lost. In today's post I'm going to address the major points of the episode and a few thoughts on where I think the show is headed.
1] Rescue! - Not exactly. The island story featured most of the Losties headed to the radio tower to turn off the signal thats been looping for 16 years and to try and contact Naomi's boat from there, all while hiding from The Others. Jack managed to get everyone to the tower and after all the chips fell in place, made the call to Namoi's boat, ending the season with hope that rescue could be on hand.
2] Danielle and Alex are finally reuinted - 16 years ago, Danielle [ the crazy French lady] gave birth to her daughter Alex, only to have Alex taken from her by Big Bad Ben and his gang of "Others". Alex was lead to believe that her mom was dead and Danielle never gave up hope that she'd one day get her daughter back. In the finale, these two were finally reunited and wound up tying up Ben and taking him hostage as their first mother-daughter activity.
3] Charlie's Dead - For the entire season, Desmond kept having "flashes" of Charlie's upcoming death and Desmond would always prevent it. This time, when Des told Charlie he was going to die, he meant it. In the previous episode, Charlie swam to the Looking Glass, the underwater DHARMA station used to block all transmissions from the outside world. Charlie was taken prisoner by the guards of the station and would soon be follwed down by both Desmond and Mikhail. Our one eyed friend Mikhail would kill both guards [ per Ben's orders] but not before Charlie figured out how to turn off the stations jamming device. Once transmissions from off the island could come through, Penny [ Desmond's long lost love] wound up communicating with Charlie long enough to realize that Penny wasnt the one who sent Naomi to the island. Mikhail, after surviving a shot from a speargun to the chest, flooded the room that Charlie was in by releasing a gernade from outside. Charlie locked himself in that room, accepting that his death meant the Losties had a chance of leaving this island. Charlie's death was heroic and one of the most emotional scenes in the series' history.
4] Locke and Walt - Walt hasn't been on the show much since the end of season one, when he was taken by The Others. The end of season two saw Walt and Micheal leave the island via boat that Ben gave them. That was the last we saw of either one of them, until Walt showed up in the finale, about a full foot taller than last time we saw him. Walt returned to help Locke, who was left for dead last time we saw him. Locke was able to get himself up and make it to the radio tower, where he met up with the other Losties and killed Naomi, telling Jack that her people coming to the island wouldnt be rescue, it would be the end. Jack of course didnt listen and made the call anyway, despite Locke and Ben's warnings.
5] Sayid, Jin and Bernard go to war - Those three Losties stayed back when the rest went to the radio tower. They knew The Others were coming to take the women that might be pregnant. Our 3 heros wound up killing 7 Others before being taken prisoner. Sawyer and Juliet, both unarmed, watched and waited for a chance to help their friends. It wasnt until Hurley came tearing through the jungle in the old DHARMA bus that he fixed up earlier in the year that the Losties would be able to free Sayid, Bernard and Jin and in the process kill 2 important Others, Tom/Mr. Friendly and Ryan Pryce.
6] Flashforwards - For the first time in Lost history, the show featured flashforwards instead of the usual flashbacks. In the off- island story we saw Jack, depressed, drinking like his Dad and rocking a wicked huge beard. I'm talking massive beard folks. jack's ready to end it all when he gets to play hero again and save people from a car crash. Throughout the show, Jack kept trying to call someone, someone who wouldnt pick up until the very end. Jack was pretty stressed out by the death of someone who's identity was never revealed. He went to the funeral and wound up being the only one. Jack described the deceased as neither friend nor family, which struck me as odd. Jack, who was heavily hooked on Oxycodine also refered to his father twice, as if his father never died. The last five minutes of the show was called the "game-changer" and for good reason. Jack finally gets the mystery person on the phone and they meet at the airport. It turned out to be Kate and she wasnt happy to see Jack. Jack kept saying that they made a mistake and they had to go back to the island.....Why Jack Why?????
Thoughts and Season Four Predictions
I have it on good authority that next season will feature both flashbacks and flashforwards. The flashforwards will tell a linear story and it doesnt look like all of the Losties left the island at once. The producers have teased that while more people than just Jack and Kate left the island, some had to stay behind against their will. Interesting.....
Who is the thrid party on their way to the island? How bad are these people if Ben's deathly afraid of them? [ Some people thought Ben was lying about not wanting the third party to come to the island, but I think he was pretty scared.]
Will Micheal and Walt be back? Will Alex and Danielle function as mother and daughter on the island? Is Juliet def. with the Losties now? It looked that way... Whose funeral did Jack attend in the flashforward and why wouldnt Kate go? Is Christian Shepard alive or was depressed Jack just in denail?
My eyes are getting heavy, which means its time to wrap this up. I think I hit up all the major points, but with Lost you're always missing something.
Sopranos series finale is this weekend. Instead of writing about the second to last episode [ which was TOO GOOD] I think I'm going to wait until after Sunday to write one review. I can't wait.
