So the end of another season is upon us, and time for me to let people know what's been going on with me. I actually haven't been doing too much other than my internship. It has been filling up my time, but not paying me enough to take vacations. That's pretty much what I expected, so I guess it's ok. I got to do some cool stuff, most of which I can't talk about, but a general idea follows the cut..
- Wrote a 50 page briefing on the state of organic regulation in America. (I get to keep this for future use, the only non-confidential document I produced!)
- Established contacts with a number of organic advocacy groups
- Helped in meetings developing a 60 minutes story on one whistleblower case (not yet aired)
- Attended a number of meetings and talks on scientific integrity in the federal system
- Developed a new case from initial contact through its current status, as the primary contact for the subject of the case
- Surveyed the landscape of medical thought on a couple different diseases, writing up information about them for cases.
Not too bad. Plus I've made some good contacts for the future. Definitely a productive internship.
I have an even more awesome internship lined up for the Fall. I get to use my undergraduate degree in Religion!
I'll be at
PFAW which is a campaign/advocacy group/thinktank dedicated to combating the conservative influences that are eroding the freedoms which make up the base of our American Identity. As they say on their web site: "Our purpose is to meet the challenges of discord and fragmentation with an affirmation of "the American Way." By this, we mean pluralism, individuality, freedom of thought, expression and religion, a sense of community, and tolerance and compassion for others."
I'll be in a new project they have called the Center for American Values in Public Life, which is so new that it doesn't have a web site yet. It's described, fairly accurately, on Wikipedia as "a think tank tasked with studying and clarifying the intersection of religion, morality, and progressive politics." Talk about right up my alley!
I'll be doing some statistical quantitative work for them, as well as some interviews, and probably helping to get the website up and running. I'm really excited, and can't wait to get started. No pay to start with, but they made certain to say that money might be in the future, as well as a possible full time job after graduation. So if I like it, I may wind up staying.
Other than Interning, I'll be taking some cool classes (including one on 'truthiness'!), and working as a part time research assistant for a professor on a project looking at WW I editorial cartoons.
Finally, I'll be taking over as the organizer of the Wednesday Night Drinking Liberally here in D.C.
It's gonna be a busy semester, but I suppose that will balance out my slacking for my first year of grad school.
and, as I always say, I'll try to update more. Should be easier this time tho. I'll actually be able to talk about things happening at my new internship!
