But...I suppose I don't think there's a double standard? Like, Damon gets flack, but he also gets the friendship and people coming to him for help and being needed. Which is a LOT after all that he's done to them. And the forgiveness will have to come slowly (although to be honest it doesn't even seem as if Damon requires it any more, everyone seems pretty chill with him these days. Alaric is pissed off, but then Damon did kill the guy just because he was being a dick to him. Imagine if someone killed Damon off everytime he was a dick to them, hee). Look at the completely different dynamic that Damon and Elena share now, she obviously HAS forgiven him and needs him (which doesn't necessarily translate to love, but that will come too I bet). I don't think it's Damon being the 'bad guy' so much as it is Damon being completely unpredictable and so everyone tends to remain wary (I mean, how would it be possible to form a true Ric/Damon friendship if Ric was afraid that everytime he got on Damon's back about something, the guy would just casually kill him. Can't imagine the expereince is very pleasant lol). They're wary, but they trust him, which is saying a lot. I mean Damon doesn't seem to be angsting too much about how everyone hates him, he's pretty happy these days apart from all the Originals and his baby bro going psychotic stuff, haha
And similarly, I don't think Stefan is being let off or anything; in fact the fact that people aren't talking about him or hashing all he's done is devastating because there's practically no one left who cares enough to do it. It's only people you care about that you bother saying things to. Stefan hasn't had any interaction with characters who really do care about him, apart from Damon. Elena is/has moved on, Caroline and he haven't even talked, and all the people whom he tried to keep safe (which he did, it wouldn't be fair to give Damon all the credit, Stefan tried very hard as well, right from the beginning in fact) don't give a damn about him now. Not to mention the worst part for him is that he's lost himself. The difference is that people seem to love Damon regardless of what he does, while Stefan has to work hard to be liked and accepted, which is the major difference between the two brothers. It's been shown time and again that Elena, who thinks Stefan/The Ripper are different people is a fool for thinking so, because they're the same person.
Honestly, if there's a Stefan is 'good', Damon is 'bad' idea (which actually I haven't seen, since a LOT of this fandom stans Damon regardless of what he does) then it's just a fandom contruct, the show doesn't cater to it imo!

Maybe the show doesn't... but while describing Damon, some actors sure do... I know it might be them being objective, but a lot of fans actually believe everything they say.
