If there is something that I have a talent for it's turning an assignment that should take me one hour into a three-hour ordeal. Well ordeal only if your definition of ordeal includes being distracted by Snood, Do the Right Thing, Everybody Hates Chris and checking your email every 6.5 minutes.
I still have not heard back about the CT which is why I've been checking my email so much. I thought that our meeting went really well. She chatted more than let me answer her questions. She asked me about my family and where my brother lives even. She's Forsythe's yearbook adviser and really liked Strally's letter. It went well but it didn't seem like I absolutely got the position. I wonder what her and creepy myspace guy Tim talked about.
I've gotten too talkative with strangers. First there's Beer Depot guy with my birthday. I don't really want to go in there anymore. And then I started talking about student teaching with the barista at Starbucks yesterday. He just graduated and hasn't found a job yet. It was interesting to me that a young guy wanted to teach third grade.
I'm getting worried and anxious about the tests on Saturday. First off, I am definitely not at my best at 7:30 am. At least the basic skills is in the morning. Secondly, out of the 20 history practice questions I only got 14 right. I thought that most of them were complete bullshit.
Examples:
10. Use the list below to answer the
question that follows.
Its conquests greatly stimulated
commerce and travel.
Its medical schools produced some of
the finest physicians in the world at
that time.
Its rulers strongly encouraged
scholarship.
Its language and religion united
people from diverse backgrounds.
Its religious beliefs strongly influenced
government, the arts, and social
customs.
The characteristics listed above best
describe which of the following
empires?
A. the Mayan Empire of the seventh
century
B. the Islamic Empire of the tenth
century
C. the Chinese Empire of the
thirteenth century
D. the Russian Empire of the sixteenth
century
The given answer was the Islamic Empire of the tenth century. I really can't think of any way of figuring out the answer to that.
17. A historian is looking for a useful
context in which to analyze U.S. policy
toward the Soviet Union after World
War II. The historian would be best
advised to examine which of the
following?
A. the consequences of imposing
harsh terms on Germany in the
treaty that ended World War I
B. the failure of the League of Nations
to obtain the active support of
leading international powers
C. the consequences of British and
French appeasement at the Munich
Conference of 1938
D. the failure of the United States to
anticipate the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor in 1941
The MTTC "correct" answer was appeasing an aggressor one. Which is, of course, the one answer that I ruled out when taking the practice test.
So if it took me three hours to do that one-page internet search paper I cannot imagine how long it will take me to learn all of human history. Hopefully it's possible to know 80% of it by Saturday afternoon. By the way, Do the Right Thing is way better when you're not asleep. It's more thoughtful than I expected. I can't say that I'm a fan of Rosie Perez's nipples though. Huge and scary.
