Got into Puerto Vallarta yesterday afternoon after waking up at 3 am to catch the shuttle down. I think I stopped hating everything that ever existed ever about San Francisco or so. No pillows or blankets on the flights on account of swine flu. (There are probable cases in Seattle; none in Puerto Vallarta or nearby. At the moment we're more likely to be vectors than the people who live here.)

I don't care what southplains says, it's a ghost town out there. Part of it may be that we're heading into low season, but the American tourists are nonexistent. Vallarta's also a tourist destination for Mexican folks and those numbers don't seem as diminished. This isn't particularly a bad thing although this will be the one trip we don't run across people we know from Seattle. Well, that aren't here for the wedding. Bride and groom did not make their connection flight due to tornados in Dallas and are resting comfortably or otherwise in Oklahoma City. They should make it in today. Wedding is not until Tuesday so it's not a huge disaster; just gives us another day to ourselves. The bars are all still closed until Monday or Wednesday depending on who you ask, which is a bit of a bummer, but we weren't really in shape to go out last night anyway. The bachelorette party is supposed to be tonight. They're threatening to have it in our hotel room. That would be amusing.

Diet went completely out the window yesterday. I'll probably try to stay better on course today (and it should be possible and tasty with all the fish down here) but we went to what is (probably sadly) becoming our favorite restaurant down here and got fajitas and I wanted the full experience. I'll probably have to redo the whole calibration phase when I get back but I'd rather that than feel like I'm missing out on my vacation.

We're staying at the Hotel Mercurio. I'm already thinking of it as the little hotel that could. The current owner bought it about six years ago and the first page of the little welcome-to-the-hotel book is all about the renovations he's been doing and what he wants to do next. It looks pretty ambitious (good luck with redoing all the plumbing) but it makes me want to root for them, anyway. Also very kitschy gay decor. Not-terribly-tasteful erotic paintings, campy posters on the wall. I still like it better than some of the more antiseptic places we've stayed down here. Plus, breakfast buffet! Which is, like, eggs and chilaquiles and yogurt and fruit, but still. (I did not consume unneccessary pastry! Go me.)

Ben's off getting hot chocolate at his local cafe, and then we're either beach-sitting or going for a walk along the Malecon. I'm tempted to buy a bottle of the local tequila that I'm never brave enough to fly back with, if we're going to have six people to help drink it tonight.

It's been good but quiet, and not going to the bars means it's going to be a cheaper trip than usual, so I guess that's nice. I'm already planning another trip in my head for October or so (always assuming no baby) when it'll presumably be busier though.
