Trust me: they don't have to be Irish. My father gets a regular kick out of going back to Hazel Crest and Country Club Hills, just so he can bitch to his heart's content about how the whole area went "straight to hell" (i.e., allowed black families to move in) after we moved out in 1979. This is in addition to practically bragging about how the suburbs of Detroit (including Dearborn, where he was born) went to shit after the whites moved "to better things." Oh, he's conciliatory in public, but the moment prying ears are gone, whammo.

Incidentally, this same sort of attitude is leading to quite a bit of entertainment here in Dallas. We're probably three years away from our sole daily newspaper, the Dallas Morning News, dying on us, and nobody at its parent company, Belo, can understand why. The paper spent decades on bashing the hell out of anyone who wasn't old, white, Protestant, and rich: women were allowed into the club so long as they recognized their subservient position and stuck to school fundraisers, but they'd damn well better not push the boundaries such as running for mayor or anything. Everyone knows that only Mexicans are Catholic, so vattick-bashing is perfectly fine except when it involves the clergy, because they buy lots of ads. Oh, and the people of South and East Dallas, as well as those living near downtown, wanted to put their advertising money through the Dallas Times Herald? Time to steal away all of the syndicated features that Herald readers liked and then buy out the paper and shut it down 18 months later. And if the Morning News is losing its main readership as they die of old age, it's obviously that fad Internet that's keeping the kids and darkies away, so screw 'em: we'll put out a freebie daily that's given away at DART train stations so we can pretend that it's actually being read by anyone under the age of 50, but that's really just an excuse for hiring a few hottie bloggers to keep our sixtysomething editors from retiring right away. However, if you want any real say in what happens in Dallas, you should have been born into the right neighborhood, went to the right classes at SMU, and cultivated the same coke dealers as our city leaders, because you won't get the time of day from us if you aren't of the proper pedigree. Now where did all of the advertising revenue go?
