I received a wonderful tour of the Most Dangerous City in America from the highly undangerous postpostist and his galfriend Claire. Nice people are they, and they have an incredible fascination with St. Louis history and architectural preservation (remind you of anyone?). Try not to weep too much at their web site, which documents St. Louis' slowly crumbling heritage. God, that poor city. Whole sections look like they've been shelled. New orleans, at least, has the excuse of Hurricane Katrina.

Proud homeowner postpostist shows me his digs. God, when I was 26 I could barely balance my checkbook, and HE already owns a house.

Another bit of blues history: "Stag" Lee's house, which somehow miraculously still stands, even though every other building that once stood nearby was leveled long ago.

By the by, the part of the building in back? That was the cathouse, where the ladies plied their wares.

Another amazing domicile. Scott Joplin lived here. It is the only place in the Midwest where the composer lived that remains standing.

Adding to my list of visited Louis Sullivan structures, the Wainwright Tomb at Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Elsewhere in Bellefontaine, I visited another Beat's grave, William S. Burroughs lies buried here at the family plot.

blues, graveyards
