Happy Birthday, JenBunny

Sep 17, 2010 22:20

Ok, this isn't the birthday fic, this is the starting point that I'm building upon.  This is from Sunday Night's All Nighter FicChat, but you need it for background.  Read this first.  It's sad.  I know.  Just read it.

Ami rubbed her forehead as emerged from the NICU. Even with his magical parentage, she was not sure the little boy would make it. Had Mamoru not stepped in, she would not be sure either mother or son would have survived the premature birth.

"Sweetie, sit down. The last thing we need is another premie tonight." Sighing as she nodded, she let Zoe lead her to a chair.

She did not have to look up to see the expectant eyes upon her. Silently, she refused to say anything until she heard the door open and close gently. The stormy eyes that met hers when she looked up demanded an honest answer.

"His chances aren't good. I was chased out, but they'll keep working through the night. If he makes it to morning, he might pull through."

"I could save him."

"No." Kadir's voice betrayed emotion, even those who didn't know him would have caught it. "You'll drain yourself. If he makes it, he'll need his parents, and while Usagi's recovering...No."

Ok, now, Happy birthday!jenbunny   I hope today is full of everything you could possibly want.  I know, I know, I just totally punched you in the gut, and the tissues beside you make me evil.  Trust me though.  Kays.  :)

After a full night's rest and quick check up by her mother, Ami was back in the NICU.  She was listed as Airic's primary doctor, and was not comfortable with other doctors working on him, though she knew it had been necessary.  Mamoru met her at the door, and she could see from his eyes that the future king had gotten no sleep, but then right now he was primarily a father and husband.

"How's Usagi?"  Ami tried to offer him an encouraging smile.

"Exhausted.  She mostly sleeps right now, and when she is awake, she asks for Airic or she just cuddles Usa."  He sighed.  "She hasn't said it, but I can see it in her eyes when she looks at me.  She wishes I healed the baby, not her."

Ami grimaced, "She's hurting, Mamoru.  You did right."  She moved to the sinks, "You're qualified, just remember I'm his doctor not you.  Scrub in."  She gestured, "When Usagi's strong enough, we'll get her back here, too.  He made it through the night, that's a good sign."

"There was no prince in the future, Ami...what if we cursed him by having him?"  There was a weariness in his voice, that made Ami take a deep breath.  There was no need to tell him he was being ridiculous--if he were rested and in a less stressed situation, he would know how bad it was.

"That we saw.  There also were no Shitennou in that future.  We first met Usa's court, our daughters, as enemies.  Airic isn't cursed."  She finished scrubbing up, "You're not rested enough to heal him.  Don't try it."

"He's my son..."

Raising an eyebrow, Ami nodded, "Yes, he is.  And it's my job, as his doctor, as Usagi's and your friend, and as Sailor Mercury, to make sure that the prince lives long enough for you to rest.  Just trust me."

When Mamoru returned to his wife's room, he found his wife and ten year old daughter, curled up together, sleeping in the bed.

Gently, not wanting to wake Usa, he shook Usagi.  "Usako, wake up."

She frowned as she blinked and looked up at him, "Mamo-chan?  Is it...Is he...?"

"Shh."  He smiled down to her as he leaned in to kiss her softly.  "He's doing so much better.  He's not out of the woods yet, but I think he's going to make it."

The next day, Ami handed a still weak but improving Airic into the arms of a smiling Usagi as Mamoru leaned over and Usa watched through the NICU window.
