Down by Law
Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni in a Jim Jarmusch prison film? How could that go wrong? Or, right, Tom Waits isn't actually very good at acting. And this is probably one of the most boring scripts ever written, and Jarmusch really takes his time with it. Benigni is funny, but he doesn't have much to work with. Maybe if you're a big fan of photography you could get something out of this, otherwise stay away. 3/10
This Is Spinal Tap
I don't get it. Maybe it's dated. It has its moments -- tiny stonehenge, and Christopher Guest (as Nigel) is often hilarious. But mostly it's just talented people pretending to be untalented -- why is that funny? 5/10
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Surprisingly good. Maybe all that classic Doctor Who increased my marginally-bad science fiction tolerance levels, but I really enjoyed this movie. Having the big star play a smaller but still significant role messed with expectations. And I did not see that ending coming. 7/10
Pan's Labyrinth
I thought this was a fantasy movie. Everything says this is a fantasy movie. Stupid historical dramas.
Do not want. Not a bad movie, though, considering. 6/10
Doctor Who: Season 2: "Children in Need," "The Christmas Invasion," and episodes 1-6 (via tv-links.co.uk).
Maybe it's just the low-resolution internet-TV talking, but they actually managed to make the Cybermen cornier than they were in the 60's. Damn. And is it just me, or is that sonic screwdriver able to do more random shit every time he pulls it out? I like the 10th Doctor a lot, though. The 9th tended to be more seriously disturbed and pissed off about the whole Time War thing. The 10th can still pull that out when he needs it, but mostly he's just a silly, silly man. Tom Baker's style of not taking bad guys seriously, and the perfect costume for the character -- a hip suit, long coat and
chuckies (the modern equivalent of
checkered pants?). 9/10
