A worthy post by someone else.

Odds are at least a couple of you have read this in the year-plus since it was posted. I'm mostly posting it so I'll be able to find it again if I want to show it to someone.

The male privilege checklist.

It's one of those things everyone should really consider, not like the trite crap people put in mass emails. It's a list of forty-five true things. That's something to consider, too; these are not opinions, just facts put into a new perspective (
The list from which it was derived, Peggy McIntosh's 26 invisible privileges of white people, is likewise arresting and worthy of reflection.).

2. I can be confident that my co-workers won't think I got my job because of my sex - even though that might be true.
10. If I have children but do not provide primary care for them, my masculinity will not be called into question.
25. There are value-neutral clothing choices available to me; it is possible for me to choose clothing that doesn't send any particular message to the world.
38. If I have children with a wife or girlfriend, chances are she'll do most of the childrearing, and in particular the most dirty, repetitive and unrewarding parts of childrearing.
45. I have the privilege of being unaware of my male privilege.

The biggest problem with the patriarchy is that so many people don't think it still exists. We booted it out of (most of) our legal documents, but it is still living in our heads.
