So it just occurred to me that I went to China and took the most awesome trip ever exactly one year ago! For those of you who don't know the story, I basically had to find my friend's friends from Stanford who were going to be on the flight. Since my contact wasn't picking his cell phone up, I had to find a party of four at the gate in SFO. I guess it made things easier that I had to find a party of two white girls and two chinese guys. Soon enough I found them. I had originally planned on staying in Shanghai for three nights and then make my way over to Beijing for another couple nights before heading back to the US. They invited me to stay with them until I could find suitable accommodation for myself. Ultimately, I ended up staying 10 nights with them and even made it to Huangshan, about 13 hours inland. Thank god for Stanford kids! And it was really the most adventurous trip ever, given the amount of unknowns I had to deal with... I swear, if I hadn't bumped into those four, I woulda gone back home within two days because getting around without knowing Mandarin would have just been extremely frustrating.
Sadly, I lost ALL my pictures from that trip...
Over the course of this school year, I've really tried to exhaust my privileges as much as I can before I get chained down and smacked in the head with reality. In a way, starting work comes at a very apt time, considering that my funds in the bank are depleting at an astronomical rate. I'll remember that trip, my transit in Tokyo when trying to fly from New York to Los Angeles, United PS First, sneaking onto an Embraer 120 on a foggy day in LAX, going to Singapore two times in a span of one month, the last renegade paradise in Lombok, Indonesia, my most recent pacific rim trip because I couldn't get back home and instead met my parents in Japan so that I could get bumped up (SFO-LAX-SYD-MEL-HKG-NRT-SFO). My dad gets drunk in the first class cabin and nearly passes out vomiting in the lavatory...haha! They can never scold me for drinking again!
So I'm down to one last spring break...
This time, I plan a round the world trip taking me through about 4 countries in a span of less than two weeks. I'll be going to Germany for breakfast beer and schnitzel, to Hungary to give Central Europe one last chance after the big disappointment that Prague was, to the Philippines hopefully on Lufthansa's A340-600 sleepers, to Singapore for a brief rendezvous with a good friend to whom I wasn't able to say a proper goodbye. This is one last big bang before backpacking with Tien through SE Asia in June.
I'm gonna miss this life...and I'm really gonna miss this place...
