I was determined to finish James Morrow's The Philosopher's Apprentice simply so I could start reading something else. It's the first of Morrow's that I've read I'm not sure if I just don't understand his rhythm or that it's just nonsense covered by literary pretension. I suspect it's both. As implied by the title there's a lot of philosophy in the book, with the plot - if it could really be called that - frequently revolving ridiculously around ludicrous conundrums whose logic would be blown over by a fourteen year-old. Characterisation seemed to be filler for where Morrow had obviously wanted to go from the beginning, and was always plagued by his unwillingness to literally write any emotion into their dialogue. (I don't mean literately.) He'd slink away and have his MC narrate his recollections of the event, leaving me thinking absolutely nothing meant anything.
Not an author I'll be rushing to read again.
