RALLY TO READ

May 07, 2009 17:14

The annual Rally to READ, a project that takes place throughout South Africa starts this weekend. Two Rally events per weekend are held for the next five weeks.

It’s a project , which started in 1998, coordinated by McCarthy Motor Holdings, The Financial Mail and READ Educational Trust. Sponsors in essence purchase a book box and training to the value of R15 000. This year the Rally will reach 151 Schools, 943 classrooms, 1200 teachers and some 35000 kids throughout deep rural South Africa. About 80 to 100 boxes are picked and packed each week with individual book selections.

I've had the great pleasure to project coordinate the book supplies and distribution for the Rally for the past decade. I've been on some Rally events and I know we make a difference. I’ve been to schools where there are almost no books at the start of the project that ends up well resourced and print rich after a three year cycle.

Each year I have insomnia, heartburn, heartache and a mild to severe heart attack to get things to run smoothly. I have a great bunch of people in this organisation to thank for making this happen.

As Obama said “Yes We Can”.

Yes we can and we make a difference to the lives of children in this country to build a better future for all.
