Vid watching/making habits

I submitted Matrix Life to the Nearly New section of VividCon before the deadline & its gone down fairly well which is always nice. In fact its gone down exceptionally well with leucocrystal who produced this amazing rec post, complete with graphic! Very flattering!

Ive always been a firm believer that like movies, fan vids often have three distinct acts - ( Read more... )

I agree that if the first part of a vid doesn't win me over, the chances are I'll lose interest pretty fast, unless it's a vidder I really love in which case I may give it a try anyway ( ... )

you probably didn't want such an essay from me on the subject...

Thats pretty much exactly what I wanted. Its always great to hear the reasoning behind ones opinions...so much more interesting to read. I too would also be pretty forgiving if its a vid from someone who consistently does a good job with their vids as I know there will be a payoff sooner or later.

Your points on music choice & song editing can often ring true if a song has a slow meandering beginning. Its going to be a tough slog to make it interesting enough & the solution is often to cut it down.

Where on earth was I when you posted that vid? Never mind, I've seen it now and it made me very happy. I love both films and the end was a surprise and also a huge Yes moment :D super!

I absolutely agree with you about the beginning and ending of a vid being so important. What I like to do and what happens for me with your Matrix vid, is to leave things with a definite conclusion but a feeling that asks - what happens next?

What I'm finding is that it's increasingly harder to reach a point where I'm truly happy with what I'm putting in the timeline. The better I get - and I am improving - the less skilled I feel. I guess that'll be the case until my technical capabilities catch up with my imagination. Which eats up loads of time and patience and why us vidders disappear off the map for months on end lol!

Some food for thought there, Sue.

I too like conclusions in vids, most of mine have them but its a refreshing change to do something like Matrix Life every once in a while...keeps the creative muscle fresh!

As a vid watcher, you have to grab me at the beginning. Especially if I know the fandom. I tend to be more forgiving if I don't really know what I'm watching yet and will try to put it together over the course of the vid. If I can't, I won't watch the vid again (which is one of the reasons why I believe that every frame is sacred [channels Eric Idle]).

As a vidder, I believe that my strength is smack dab in the middle--in the bridge. If I am successful in the breakdown, it will confirm what went before (which, hopefully, was interesting enough to keep you watching), crescendo into OMG, and then set up a killer ending. When I'm building the vid, I won't even start if I don't have the ending already worked out in my head. I may change the ending clips several times, but the idea/conclusion is always worked out beforehand.

Every frame is sacred...every frame is good. Every frame is needed in our fandomhood. Don't even get me started on an Eric the Half a Bee rendition. :D

Interesting to hear your justification for the mid section, makes excellent sense the way you've put it. Also to hear that you can change the end shots even though the ending is planned is unusual from my perspective at least. If its planned surely you have a scene in mind to use at the end? What makes you change it?

Morning! Which reminds me, I want "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" played at my funeral. What?! It's my theme song!

The thing about the bridge is probably due to my own vidding history. In every vid, the bridge intimidated me. I couldn't necessarily edit it out since it's usually very important musically--key change, crescendo, something--so I had to conquer it ( ... )
