(Note: This post has nothing specifically to with Ubuntu or Linux. It's more about what naming conventions actually work best for me versus everyone else.)
Ok, so I just installed an Ubuntu 10.10 box. My previous box was an Ubuntu 8.04 box.
It's way easier for me to think about the release numbers (8.04 vs. 10.10) than the release names (Hardy Heron vs. Maverick Meerkat). I actually had to look those names up to make sure I got them right. (I mistakenly thought I had Lucid Lynx. The next one is Natty Narwhal.)
The numbers are just easier for me, despite the fact that they did move to an alphabetical-order sequence 5 years ago.
Here's the thing, though: When I go out to the web looking for help, I only find references to the
various version names. Few people seem to use the numeric version. I end up always having to go a cheat sheet. Am I unique in this peculiar sort of dysnomia?
