Next on the itinerary was the Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium
Turning into the road where the entrance was situated was a chore in itself
There was a line of cars, 300m long, waiting to
Everyone in the car thought it would be smarter to make a U-turn up ahead to turn in
Who knew that there was no U-turn in sight for the next kilometre or more
And soon, they were in Yishun!
Seeing that it was lunch time, they decided to have a meal first
After trying a few places in Yishun that were packed with Sunday brunch crowds,
Auntie Millie recommended the Beaulieu House at Sembawang Park
Casper had never been to Sembawang Park but he has heard about that restaurant
The place was really cosy and lovely being housed in a black-and-white colonial house
Situated right in the park and a stone's throw away from the beach and jetty
It was a single-storey structure with two seating areas and a billiard table
The place served Western food Hainanese style and regular Chinese restaurant fare
Casper was too famished to take pictures of the food
But the most memorable was the two huge crabs cooked in salted egg yolk sauce
It was ultimately fantastic and the gravy was absolutely sublime!
Left: The entrance to Beaulieu House
Left: View of the main seating area
Right: Exterior of the section where we were seated
Left: From where Casper was seated, he could see the jetty and Malaysia in the distance
Right: Scenery on the way back to the car
When the lot of them managed to get in to the Mandai complex
Casper was very impressed by the estate
It was his first time there in more than a decade
and the architecture and facilities impressed him much
The Chinese blocks for the Taoists and Buddhists were simple but elegant
With sweeping arches, exposed beams and large column pillars reminiscent of traditional Chinese architecture
Between the Christian blocks are koi ponds with simple and well kept greenery
The whole complex felt really tasteful, elegant and peaceful (save for the throng of people that day)
He felt assured that his paternal grandfather has a good environment for his final resting place
He also laughed to himself inside when he saw his Eldest Uncle light a cigarette to place at the foot of the niche
His grandfather had been a heavy smoker almost all his life
The whole experience was rather enriching, in a sense
It helped Casper remember his departed grandparents and feel close to them although they are gone
He also experienced some traditional Chinese culture that he is not very much in touch with
With no hesitation, he promised to take part again next year
