The original core for My Name Is Nobody dates back to 1970. As Sergio Donati explained, "My Name Is Nobody" was born from an idea (of Leone’s brother-in-law [Fulvio Morsella], bear in mind) to which I contributed too, at an early stage. It was, as is evident from the title, which never changed, a Western adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, where Ulysses was a Confederate prisoner escaped from a Union concentration camp who returned home after endless adventures, only to find his farmhouse invaded by Yankee carpetbaggers who courted Penelope. Massacre ensues, like in Homer. The End."3 The many references to the Odyssey ("We had everything in there: Circe, the pigs, the Cyclops, even Penelope with the bad guys…") were then put aside and the project changed shape, becoming "essentially a productive-commercial operation because Sergio wanted to cast Terence Hill...
Leone then got in touch with other scriptwriters and eventually settled on Ernesto Gastaldi, who recalled his meeting with Leone as follows:
When Piero Lazzari introduced me to Leone, he whispered to my ear that I wore jersey number 23, which means I was the twenty-third scriptwriter that Sergio "examined," and probably the count included those who uselessly worked on the Western version of the Odyssey. Sergio didn’t even greet me. He looked at me and started telling, miming it, the film’s opening scene, the way he had envisioned it: three riders arriving at sunset, a barber shop, a middle-aged man in need of a shave … he talked for ten minutes without saying anything practical, but only suggesting the atmosphere. Then he stared at me with an ironic look and said, "Ok. Now you go on. Bring me a story in one week." And so I did: therefore, the story of "My Name Is Nobody" is only and entirely mine, and the name Fulvio Morsella, which appears in the credits as co-author of the story, is there because Fulvio himself asked me to put it there "out of courtesy" - a courtesy you cannot refuse to someone with whom you have signed a lucrative deal.
