Pointless Nostalgia

Jul 17, 2006 18:04

I don’t know about yall but during the summer I cant go to be anytime before 4 o’clock…perhaps it is because I don’t work and most of you work like nine year old Cambodians. So with so much time I find myself doing some erratic activities. My usual schedule is to watch a movie from my AFI 100 greatest films list (I only have about twenty to go….but they are getting exponentially obscure, I mean where do I find a DVD copy of the birth of a nation?), watch headline news till the stories drone into recapitulation, and if I am still vigilant I usually read my latest off the all-time best books list (currently Forester’s A Passage to India.) In between all of that I usually surf the net, from my word-of-the-day , to just reading up on Wikipedia (that thing us unbelievable I spend a lot of time on their enhancing my historical proficiency….I I have always had an affinity for history but Wikapedia generated a substantial desire for a more ecumenical understanding…ask Charles about my extensive knowledge on the China’s Great Leap Forward. In between those two I usually hit up some IMDB (again trying extend my vast movie cinematic expertise), some rotten tomatoes (my for mentioned unemployment requires movies have to be of the highest calibur to spend what little money I have), and I am not gonna lie some youtube. I usually watch like episodes of Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute Your Shorts, and what not. A couple nights ago I decided to type in Disney/Universal Studios rides the result was awesome. People filmed the rides in some cases in their entirety. If you guys were unaware I lived eleven years in Orlando, and seeing these rides brought back a palpable nostalgia. I mean honestly when I moved here it was like “lets go to six flags yaaaaaa.” Comparing Six flags to Disney/Universal is like comparing Oriental and native African genitals (I don’t know I felt the need for a analogy…take it or leave it.). I mean honestly Six flags is gross, the rides are pretty lame (IE the Batman ride where Gotham City looks like an Special Ed diarama), and I think I got ringworm from the Texas giant. Disney and Universal are far superior in attractions and just ALL-AROUND. So I have decided next summer to go back and live like a eleven year old again. I invited Reagan cause I think he would be just as willing to suppress our then 21 year old male urges and replace them with cotton candy and mickey hats….. maybe one of those turkey legs as well…we will play it by ear. I guess it is just a place that feels “safe” to me. Like I love to be in grocery stores, the whole ambiance, the smooth muzak they play, makes you feel like nothing bad could happen there ever. As well as like watching the Sandlot or some old movie tied subconsciously to your childhood. And there is no other place I would rather be than a mall during Christmas time, everyone all bundled up, the music, the genial disposition of everyone. I am sure we all have those places or am I crazy?
