Room 234/236: Friday late afternoon to evening

Jan 05, 2007 13:46

Parker opened up the doors to both rooms, set out the half-vanilla, half-chocolate cake from Jeff, God of Biscuits, and put a sign outside the hallway of 236:

Happy 18th Birthday to ME

Come on in and have some cake!

Booze and prezzies welcome.

Then sat down to contemplate her present from her father. Who'd sounded ridiculously pleased about ( Read more... )

River hadn't known it was Parker's birthday. Luckily she had brought some souvenirs from Babylon 5, so she had quickly wrapped a model of the B5 station in a pillowcase and tied a ribbon around it before appearing on Parker's doorstep.

"River!" Parker handed over a napkin full of cake and grinned at the pillowcase. "I got your Christmas present. Thank you, it's adorable. I've got one for you too here, somewhere."

River accepted the cake with a grin. "Happy you liked it," she said. "Oh, and presents for me?" The grin got wider.

"It made me think of you," Parker explained, and fished a gold-foil envelope out of her pile of presents, before opening up the pillowcase. "Ohhh, cool!" She lifted the model out and studied it with delight. "Where did you get this?"

"It's a model of the Babylon 5 station. Went there to see Ivanova, with Blair... oh!" Her face lit up as she saw the tickets. "I haven't been to a dance performance since... before the Academy."

"Yeah? You like them?" Parker grinned in relief. "I liked that they weren't traditional ballet. Nice, of course, but... too conservative for you. You can take Blair, too, if you think he'd like it." She looked around for a place to put the model station, and grinned, putting it carefully next to the ship from Archie and the ship-in-a-bottle from Weiss. "Perfect. How is Ivanova anyway? I haven't heard anything since she left in August."

"She's her usual self. And very busy. It was good to see her, and good for her and Blair to catch up." River examined the tickets closely. "I will ask Blair and see if he thinks he'll like it." She looked up again. "Thank you. How was your Christmas?"

Parker grinned, imagining Ivanova grumbling and working and occasionally drinking but having a lot of fun. "You're welcome. And it was-- good, for the most part. Athens." A ton of images in her head there, more than willing for River to see them: the Parthenon, riding a Vespa behind Vasilios, the Aegean at sunset, fireworks on Christmas Day. "And L.A., which was fun, mostly." Muscle Beach. Disneyland. Dancing with Weiss.

Kissing Weiss.

And a Christmas carol started up inside her head. Parker rolled her eyes at herself, then suppressed it. Anyone who'd been there had seen it. "It was good. Really good."

River held back a chuckle at Parker's embarrassment at the memory of kissing Weiss. Still, the other memories were more interesting. "The Parthenon? It's 2500 years old. Never seen a building that old."

"You'd love it. Maybe sometime, on one of the Spring Break trips, you'll get to see it." She smiled. "It's amazing, although I'm sure a space station is even more incredible, in most ways."

River chuckled. "I think that depends on what you're used to." She raised her glass to Parker, thinking she had to be careful not to drink even half of it. "Happy birthday! May your next year bring you good luck and happiness. And I probably shouldn't drink this."

"I can get you a pop, if you want. Not much experience with alcohol?" Parker grinned, and fished a Coke out of the cooler. "And thanks for the good wishes."

"Got very drunk at Christmas," River said. "Alcohol seem to have a strong effect on me. I'm considering practising, but that might be embarrassing."

Parker winced. "Especially around here, where you're practically guaranteed to get photographed. You could try a few things in private, I guess, with a couple friends to make sure you didn't get too goofy." She handed over the pop can, and smiled a little. "People aren't drinking as much this year yet, but I'm sure someone will start a game of I Never or drunken Truth or Dare at some point."

River winced too. She wasn't that bothered about photographs or being asked questions - they'd never come up with the ones she wouldn't want to answer anyway - but she didn't want to hurt people. And she knew she was capable of it.

"Was more thinking in lines of not wanting to kick someone's head in."

"Ahh. That." Alcohol would probably break down other people's inhibitions too; River could get flooded, and then end up lashing out through instinct gone wonky. "How have you been lately? That hasn't happened since October, has it?"
