SPAMalot!

Yesterday was such a great day. I had tickets to see the 8:00 show of "Spamalot" at the Canon Theatre here in Toronto, so my sister and I spent the day downtown first to enjoy the weather.

I bought the Dead Pirates special edition of "The Princess Bride" (which I plan on watching later on today)and then I went and got myself a tattoo. I got it done of my left shoulder blade. It's a red maple leaf. Now I have two tattoos, although I plan on getting at least one more. I had to wear the bandage to cover it during the play, so it looked a little silly considering I had a nice dress on, but whatever.

THEN, to add to how stupid I looked, one of my shoes broke to the point where I couldn't even wear it. So, for the rest of the night (including the fact I hadn't even gotten to the play yet)I walked around with one shoe on! I felt like a knob but I was in such a good mood that it was too funny! lol.

Anyway, on to the show (because I did promise lea724 a review, afterall).

I love Monty Python. But I had no idea I would end up loving this show as much as I did. It was one of the most fun times I've ever had watching a show live. From start to finish I was laughing almost nonstop. Right from the Historian's introduction down to the "Find Your Grail" reprise at the end, I couldn't take my eyes off of the stage.

The plot was suitably bizarre for Monty Python. King Arthur (a fantastic Michael Siberry), along with his trusted "horse" Patsy, are on a search to find knights to help him defend his kingdom. Along the way he meets Dennis Galahad, Sir Brave Lancelot and Sir Robin-the-not-as-brave-as-Sir-Lancelot. He describes how he became king by recieving the sword Excaliber from the Lady in the Lake (an equally great Pia Glenn) and the Laker Girls. They also meet the Knights who say Ni in a very Expensive Forrest, the Foot of God (voiced by John Cleese) and they also run into the French Bastard, from whose taunts they flee. And of course, who can forget the Killer Bunny? lol.

The sets were great. Full of colour and little inside jokes. Everyone gave a great performance and had both the talent to sing and dance. I also loved the guy who played the gay Prince Herbert. He was fantastic and so funny. I cannot get over how incredibly funny that French Bastard scene was at the conclusion of Act One. Just the whole thing was so funny. I haven't laughed that hard watching a play since I saw "The Producers" almost two years ago.

The songs were all really catchy and fun. I actually can't wait to buy the soundtrack (which I plan on doing tonight). I especially loved when Arthur and the Lady of the Lake sang "The Song That Goes Like This". It just reminded me of every sappy show I've ever seen. "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" was fun and had the audience involved. Plus, it had a great knights tap-dancing routine. And finally, the best song was definately "Find Your Grail", especially at the end before everyone took their bows.

Overall, that was one of the best live experiences I've ever had. I bought the programme too and even that was so well put together. Just looking through it actually makes me laugh out loud. I'd HIGHLY recommed this to anyone who has not yet seen it, especially to anyone on my FList from Toronto who hasn't bought tickets yet. I give it a perfect review. I didn't have a single complaint.

If you don't go and see "Spamalot" than "I fart in your general direction!"
