There's so many things I could post about, but let's do a meme instead:
1. What’s the most depressing movie you’ve ever watched?
Honestly, I count Home for the Holidays as one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. It's nominally a comedy (starring, among others, Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Anne Bancroft, and Charles Durning), but it was just a little too close to home, if you'll pardon the expression, and with such an utter sense of hopelessness and being trapped with no way out. Ugh.
I do get that not everyone has the same perceptions I do, however.
2. What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?
There's a lot of ways to look at this. There's Ju-on disturbing, and there's 'night Mother. I'll take the former over the latter any day.
3. An actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 8 movies? Name the movies.
Okay, I was going to go easy and pick 8 Katharine Hepburn movies at random, but let me pick my 8 favorites:
Holiday
The Philadelphia Story
State of the Union
Without Love
Pat and Mike (Still need to do a Why You Should Watch... post for this one, don't I?)
The Lion in Winter
Guess Whose Coming to Dinner?
Desk Set
4. A film you could watch on repeat for the rest of your life?
Here's the thing: at a certain point, I generally stop watching any given movie for a few years because it is indelibly imprinted in my brain (see: The Lion in Winter). So, you know, some movies do play on repeat in my head and will for the rest of my life.
How about....Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan?
5. What’s the very first film you remember watching?
King Kong (1933). My dad worked for RCA for a couple of years in the 1970s, and they let him take home a fancy-shmancy new laser disc player with a couple of discs, King Kong being one of them. I would have been around 3 or 4-years-old.
6. A film you wish you hadn’t watched?
Honestly, there's bad movies, but there's not really any I regret trying to watch at all. If nothing else, the curiosity factor was satified.
7. A film you wish had a sequel?
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Also Master and Commander, which I still hold out hope for someday. :-)
8. Which book would you like to see adapted into a film?
That's definitely a multiple choice. I still have hopes for at least one Temeraire film.
The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story by Peter Lefond (not to be confused with
the Dreyfus affair scandal) has languished off and on in development hell for decades, and I think we're finally at a place where it could be made. I'd love it if they did.
9. The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched?
There's lots of special effects movies I think are beautiful, and things which can be done with modern CGI that were not even possible just a few years ago, but Lawrence of Arabia is still just stunning. I don't think anything else even comes close.
10. What’s your favourite movie director?
I keep saying that I will see anything Christopher Nolan makes, because even when he makes movies I don't particularly like (e.g., Insomnia), they're still interesting. He has a fascinating way of putting things together. (And I still think he was vastly underrated for Interstellar.)
11. Your favourite movie genre?
The modern comic book film is totally owning me right now, maybe because Hollywood has stopped treating them like "comic books" and started treating them like fascinating stories.
12. A movie that holds a special place in your heart?
There are a lot of those. Let's go with Holiday, since that's a short answer.
13. Your favourite comedy film?
I will invariably forget a gazillion movies when asked to pick a favorite one, even by genre, but I'm going to go with The Life of Brian. It's still hilarious, absurd, and brilliant satire. All with Latin conjugation.
14. A music video you would love to see developed into a film?
I...don't think that's ever occurred to me as a thing.
15. A film everyone loves but you hate?
My feelings about Terms of Endearment are part of the public record already, Your Honor.
16. A film you love but everyone else hates?
I can tell you I'm one of only two people I know willing to admit that, hey, I kinda enjoyed Van Helsing.
17. Which cinematic universe would you like to live in?
There are many movies I love. Very few of them would I even want to visit. Even the based-on-actual-history ones.
How about John Carter, just because at least it means James Purefoy sneaking around being snarky in a toga. IN SPACE!
18. What’s your favourite biopic?
Becket. It's not the greatest one ever made, but still my favorite.
19. Mainstream movies or indie movies?
I don't generally think of one as better than the other or preferable. I also think "mainstream" and "popular" are used far more in sneering tones by snobs to be synonymous with "bad" so they don't have to actually admit they A) want to watch something "mainstream" and/or B) occasionally want to watch something that's pure fun.
I also think the line between "indie" and "mainstream" has been blurring more and more over the last 15-20 years, to the point that I think most people would have no idea which is which.
Short answer: both.
20. Old movies or contemporary movies?
Again, both.
21. A film with an amazing soundtrack?
There's amazing like the Lord of the Rings movies and amazing like Guardians of the Galaxy.
Is now a good time to mention I listened to the White Nights soundtrack over and over again until I nearly wore the record out, back in the day?
