Summary: Senator Fred Lehne has been brutally attacking, raping, and murdering young men for over a decade, but always evades arrest thanks to his money and power. He has everyone fooled, except one team of detectives headed by Captain Jeffrey Dean Morgan and his protege Jensen Ackles. When things become worse, Morgan goes to FBI agents Misha Collins and Jim Beaver for help. They offer it in the form of Jared Padalecki, hotshot profiler who also happens to be Jensen's boyfriend. But there is more Jared...he also happens to be the only surviving victim of Lehne's...
“Again?” Jensen’s voice cracked. Jared was still shaking in his grasp and had tears coursing down his pale cheeks. “Jay? What are you talking about? You’ve never met Lehne before tonight.” Jared flinched and actually whimpered at the name. What was going on?
Jared wasn’t making much sense at this point and couldn’t stop trembling. His breathing had picked up speed as well. Jensen could see the signs of a full-blown panic attack. For once, he didn’t know how to stop it…
“Jared?”
Jared didn’t answer. He kept mumbling nonsense about Lehne hurting him. It was starting to become too much for Jensen. He was nearing his own breaking point when he heard the sounds of tires squealing behind him. Suddenly, his friends and coworkers were all at his and Jared’s side.
“Jen?” Danneel asked softly, placing her hand on his shoulder.
“H-he…” Jensen stuttered.
“I know it baby,” Danneel soothed. She looked up to see JD and Jim taking Jared from Jensen’s grasp so that they could check him over. Jensen started to lunge for his boyfriend once more, but Danneel managed to hold him back. “Let us help, Jen. We’ll get Jay to the hospital and-“
“No!” Jensen ordered adamantly. “It will just make it worse!” He tried to shrug out of Danneel’s hold, but she held strong.
“Ok…what do you suggest here Jen?” JD barked.
Jensen closed his eyes and tried to calm his breathing. “S-Sam...”
“Dr. Ferris?” JD asked.
“Y-yeah…she’ll know how to help him more than any hospital anyway.”
“Has a point,” Jim added as he tried to pull Jared up off the sidewalk more. “Danni, get Jensen in the van. JD and I will get Jay here in and hand him over to Jen. He’s having a panic attack…he barely knows what’s gonna on ‘round him right now it’s so bad. We need to get him to Sam.”
“Sure thing.” With that, Danni helped Jensen off the ground and over to the van. She pushed him into the back while JD and Jim half dragged Jared behind her.
A few seconds later, Jared was being placed into Jensen’s arm in the van. Jared could still tell it was Jensen through the fog of his panic. He curled into Jensen and gripped tightly at his t-shirt. His tears began to soak the soft cotton while his mumbling became muffled in the fabric.
“I’ve gotcha babe,” Jensen whispered, running his hand through Jared’s sweat soaked hair.
“S-sor-sorry,” Jared mumbled into Jensen’s chest.
“Shhh…don’t talk, Jare. Just keeping breathing. You’re safe. No one’s gonna hurt you.” Jensen continued with the soothing monologue for the rest of the drive to Sam’s office. Somewhere along the way, one of the others must have called ahead to warn her, because she met them at the front door.
“Aww…Jared,” she sighed, looking at the young man. Jensen and Jim were half carrying, half dragging him into her building while JD and Danneel trailed behind. “Take him to my office and put him on the couch! I’ll be right there.” Sam ran to the supply room to grab some things.
Jensen didn’t want to leave Jared’s side. He hadn’t since his boyfriend had left Lehne…
“Come on, Jen,” Jim suddenly said by his ear.
“What?”
Jim sighed and placed his hand on Jensen’s shoulder. “Let’s go outside and let Sam do her job, buddy. He’ll be in good hands. You know that.”
“NO! I’m not leaving him!” Jensen’s booming voice only caused Jared’s panic to increase.
“Yes, you are, Jen,” Jim ordered. “He’s just picking up on your anxiety at this point kid. Let’s go…now.” Jim tightened his grip on Jensen and pulled him out of the room. Jensen wasn’t too happy about it, but didn’t see any real choice but to follow the man out of the room.
Sam scurried past him and went on to shut the door behind her, effectively closing Jensen away from Jared. He allowed Jim to guide him to a chair out in Sam’s waiting room. He slumped into the poorly padded seat and hung his head. It pounded and pulses as Jared’s haunting words played like a bad record.
“He’s doing it again! Lehne…again. Can’t…let him…he’ll hurt me again…”
Jensen put is head in his hands as he desperately tried to figure out what the hell was going on and what Jared meant. Part of Jensen wanted to chalk it up to panic ramblings. But a bigger part of him didn’t really believe that lie…
The rest of the world fell away as Jensen sat there. He didn’t hear Sam come out of the office, nor did he see the look she gave to JD as she crossed the hall towards Jensen. None of it mattered. He was too busy trying to figure out the truth.
A slender hand to his shoulder finally shook him out of his headspace. He jumped back in the chair. His eyes darted for a second before settling on Samantha’s worried face. “How is he?” Jensen quickly asked once he got his bearings. He stood shakily from his place in the seat.
“Ok…I ended up giving him a shot of Valium to calm him down. He’ll probably be a little groggy for awhile, but it helped.”
“Shit,” Jensen cursed, running a hand through his messy spikes. “He hasn’t had to have that in years…”
“I know, baby,” Sam soothed. She reached over and ran a hand up and down Jensen’s trembling back. “He’ll be fine. I guess seeing Lehne…” Samantha stopped midsentence as she realized what she said.
But it was too late. Jensen had heard the name slip and he had to close his eyes to keep the tears from finally falling. The emotions were all beginning to become too much for him to handle.
“Seeing Lehne did it to him, didn’t it?” Jensen asked in a small voice.
“Jen, you didn’t know-“
“I knew going undercover would bring up all those memories of his attack and he’d have problems. I should’ve…”
“You didn’t know Lehne…” Once again, Sam cut herself off.
A devastated look crossed Jensen’s face as his exhausted mind began to piece everything together.
“Lehne? Oh God, he…no! It couldn’t be,” he gasped. That bastard’s name had been mentioned too often today for his liking. “Can I see Jay?”
“Of course sweetie. He’s on the couch in my office. Just…go easy on him Jen. He never wanted you to know.”
And that hurt more than pretty much anything else could have. Jared had never planned on telling him…
Jensen tried to push the thoughts out of his mind as he walked back to the office…back to Jared. He slowly slid the door open and crept into the room. Jared was lying on his side, curled into himself on the small leather couch. Sam had tucked an afghan around his lower body, but he still shivered under the heavy material. He looked so young.
Jensen walked over to his boyfriend and leaned down on one knee. He ran his hand over Jared’s hair. The younger man flinched at the touch and awoke with a start.
“God,” Jensen gasped.
“J-Jen?” Jared’s eyes settled on Jensen after a few seconds. It was obvious he was still feeling the effects of the drug. “So-sorry. Startled me…”
Jensen looked a little shell-shocked as he gazed at Jared.
“Jen?” Jared finally was able to push himself up on the couch to give his boyfriend a better glance. He reached up with a shaking hand and touched Jensen’s pale cheek.
Jensen startled at the touch as well.
“Jen?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Jared looked panicked and confused. “I don’t understand…”
“Jay…why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
“I-I’ve never lied. I-“
“You just didn’t tell me.”
“Tell you what?” Jared asked, hoping he was just being paranoid. Praying that he hadn’t said anything during his panic attack.
“It…it was Lehne…wasn’t it?”
Jared’s face briefly contorted into a mask of fear before he tried to rein it back in quickly.
“It was,” Jensen answered for himself. “Oh God, Jay!”
“I’m sorry,” Jared replied. The drugs were starting to wear off as the seriousness of the situation took precedent.
Jensen heard the apology but his mind was too busy going over everything. Jared had never mentioned who his attacker was, and Jensen had never seen a reason to pry. He never thought it was Lehne. The possibility of that never registered. It should have…
“Jen?” Jared’s quivering voice filtered through his thoughts briefly.
“You’re off the case,” Jensen said softly yet fiercely.
“W-what?” Jared managed to finally push himself up on the couch. “No I’m not!”
“Yes, you are! No way in hell that you are going to go in there again! What if Lehne recognizes you?!?”
“He didn’t-“
“But he will!”
“You have no right to take me off Jensen!”
“I’m one of the lead detectives so-“
“Screw that! I’m still on this case Jen! You don’t get to make that decision for me! I’ll do it on my own if I have to!”
Jensen was practically shaking with frustration and fear. Jared just stared up at him. The anxiety and terror from earlier had been replaced with a strong determination that Jensen knew would not be budged.
Jensen blew out a breath and slammed his fist into the wall. The plaster barely cracked, but left his knuckles red and bruising. With one last glance at Jared, he stormed out of the office. He needed some air…
“Jensen!” Jared called. It did no good though. He slumped back against the couch in defeat. Today definitely wasn’t going as he had hoped it would.
“Jared?” Samantha’s voice called into the room.
“Hey,” Jared miserably answered.
“I take it that didn’t go too well?”
Jared huffed. “Whatever gave you that idea?”
“I’m sorry baby.” She sat down on the couch and pulled him into a hug. “Why don’t you let me drive you home?”
“No…I don’t really want to go there just yet.” Going home to an empty house didn’t sound all that appealing. He seriously doubted Jensen went back there. “I think I’ll just go for a walk, stop and get some tea…”
“Jared, I think you should-“
“I’ll be fine Sam. I just let my emotions get the best of me. I’ll be fine.” He gave her a kiss on the cheek before he walked out of the office. The Valium had helped to calm him down from the attack, but he was still on edge after talking with Jensen.
His feet carried him towards the local coffee shop. It was Jensen’s favorite. With a sigh, he pushed open the glass door. A little bell rang above his head, and the owner glanced up from the register.
“Hey Jay!” She smiled sweetly at him as he approached her counter.
“Hi Gen.” He tried to muster up the same energy she had showed him, but it wasn’t working.
“What’s the matter, sweetie?”
“Am I that obvious?”
“A little…”
“Got in a fight with Jensen this afternoon…”
“Aww…I’m sorry sweetheart.” She reached across the counter and gently squeezed his hand. Jared and Jensen had been regulars at her coffee shop since she’d first opened it near their neighborhood. The two men had always been her favorites. “I’m sure you guys will work things out. How about I make you one of those vanilla teas you love so much…on the house?”
Jared gave her a slight smile at that. “Thank you…”
“Just go sit down over there and I’ll bring it right out.” She turned away from him and began preparing his drink. With yet another sigh, Jared turned around and headed towards one of the comfortably padded chairs in the corner. It wasn’t long before Genevieve was setting his mug down in front of him on the rounded table. He smiled his thanks and she squeezed his shoulder before going back to work. A steady stream of customers began pouring into the shop.
He sipped from the mug and allowed the hot liquid to sooth his tired body for a moment. The relief didn’t last long though. His worries came crashing back over him and he had to close his eyes against the building emotions once more.
“Excuse me,” a smooth voice called out next to him. “You mind if I take a seat here? It’s a little busy…”
Jared opened his eyes and came face to face with a very tall man. The guy looked around Jensen’s age. But his build rivaled Jared’s own, and his blue eyes were almost as startlingly beautiful as Jensen’s green ones. Almost…
“Um…” Jared really wasn’t a big fan of strangers, even after all these years. But the shop really was packed now. “I guess you can…”
“Thanks!” The guy took up the seat opposite Jared and smiled, seeming to ignore Jared’s unease. “Name’s Tom by the way.” He extended a hand to Jared.
Jared reluctantly took the offered hand. “Jared…”
“Nice to meet you! You come here often? Seems like a nice place. Never really been here myself.”
“Y-yeah…my boyfriend and I come here all the time. It’s our favorite.”
“Boyfriend?” Tom repeated with disappointment. “Damn…should’ve known. You are too handsome to be single.”
Jared blushed at the compliment and felt his unease grow. “Um…”
“Shit,” Tom cursed as he finally picked up on Jared’s discomfort. “I’m sorry.” Tom held up his hands in apology. “Sometimes I let my mouth get away from me and don’t think. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Damn…um…let me buy you another,” Tom waved his hand at Jared’s nearly empty mug, “ to make up for my stupidity.”
“No, it’s ok.” Jared smiled a little. “It’s not a big deal…you didn’t know. And really, I’m fine with just this.” Jared pointed towards his mug. “I really should be heading home anyway.” He said it still pretty miserably. He figured Jensen would still not be home…
“Please don’t leave on my account! I’m so-“
“No, it’s not you…I’m just…”
“I see,” Tom said sadly. “Lovers spat?”
“Something like that,” Jared huffed.
“Well, if you ever want to talk,” Tom said while digging in his coat pocket for his card, “give me a call. I promise not to flirt too much next time.”
The man sounded genuine, so Jared took the card and stored it in his pocket. “Thanks,” he muttered. He gave Tom a little wave before going back to the counter with his mug and leaving.
Tom remained sitting at the table for a few more minutes. Once he was sure that Jared was far enough away, he took out a notepad from his pocket and began scribbling down some things.
*********
It was late by the time Jensen pulled his Impala into the driveway. Most of the lights in the house were already shut off, and he could only see a soft glow coming from the upstairs window. He’d been driving around for hours now, trying to clear his head before he let his fear and anger get the better of him in front of Jared.
Jensen tiredly ran a hand through his hair as he shut the Impala’s door and headed into the house. Harley whined at him as soon as he opened the door. He patted the mutt’s head and received a gentle lick in return.
“How’s your daddy doin’ boy?”
Harley whined once more. The dogs were extremely good at picking up on Jared and Jensen’s moods.
With another tired sigh, Jensen started to climb the stairs and walk towards their bedroom. The door was cracked open, allowing a little light to filter out into the hallway. He quietly nudged it open the rest of the way. Sadie, who was lying on the bed with Jared, looked up as he entered the room. Jared, on the other hand, was fast asleep on the bed, surrounded by various files and his laptop.
“Hey baby girl,” Jensen whispered to Sadie as he scratched behind her ears. Despite the attention, the dog’s focus remained on Jared. “I’ll make it up to him,” Jensen sighed. Sadie looked over at him as if she didn’t believe him just yet.
Jensen turned his attention away from Sadie and finally glanced towards the papers and laptop. The screen had already gone to sleep, showing that Jared himself had been out of it for a while. Jensen ran his hand over the mouse to get it back on; the screen flickered to an email window Jared had left open…it was the invitation from Lehne for the next charity gala.
“Shit,” Jensen cursed under his breath and slammed the computer shut.
The noise was enough to cause Jared to awake with a start. “Jen?” he mumbled sleepily, sounding all of five instead of twenty-five.
“Sorry…didn’t mean to wake you.”
“No, I wanted to stay up so we could t-talk.” Jared rubbed the sleep from his eyes and looked up at Jensen. He was still pale with red, puffy eyes. It made Jensen’s heart ache at the sight.
“Guess we should,” Jensen sighed. He moved the papers and laptop off the bed so that he could lean back against the headboard. Sadie moved down and settled at their feet.
Jared sat up and turned towards him. “I’m sorry.”
“I know. Wish I could say I overreacted, but pretty sure I didn’t.” Jensen looked to Jared and saw the younger man nod. “But I shouldn’t have left like I did. I’m sorry for that.”
“Thank you,” Jared mumbled, casting his eyes down to the sheets. His hands idly twisted into them.
“For what?”
“Coming back,” Jared choked.
“Jay,” Jensen said as he reached over to untangle Jared’s hand from the blanket. He laced their fingers together. “I’m not going to leave you. Am I pissed that you never told me? Hell yeah. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to run.”
“Others would…hell, others did…”
“Jared?”
Jared stayed silent for a few moments before he started talking again. His eyes were once more trained on the bed, but this time on the spot where Jensen’s hand was still holding his. “I…I had a boyfriend, back when everything…” He waved his free hand to signal what he meant. “Um, after it happened, I didn’t really want to talk about it. Lehne…he’d told me he’d kill my family and friends if I ever told them. He never saw me again after I got away…he went looking for me when I was hiding in the woods. I could hear him yelling at me.” Jared paused to let the memories fade. But I knew I had to try. I wanted to try for Aaron.”
“He didn’t take it well?” Jensen supplied.
“Understatement of the year,” Jared answered with a crack in his voice. “He flipped shit. He wouldn’t listen…didn’t believe me…couldn’t handle it.” Tears welled up in Jared’s eyes at the memories, but he didn’t allow them to fall. “I didn’t know how you’d react. I was so used to not talking to people and then you…”
“But why not tell me after we’d been dating for awhile? Why drag this out for so long?”
“By the time I knew you wouldn’t run, you were on Jim and JD’s team. I was scared that if by some miracle you all did catch Lehne that you would go off on the bastard. It could’ve ruined any potential trial and I couldn’t have that be on me…be on us. It would be all my fault.”
“Jay…”
“I couldn’t risk it. And I’m sorry that I never opened up to you about it. But I just-“
“I get it. Don’t like it, but I get it baby.” Jensen reached up and ran his hand through Jared’s hair.
Jared briefly leaned into the touch, allowing the small comfort. “Aaron…he acted like he was ok with everything at first. But then he saw.” Jared waved his hand at his chest and then at his thigh. “He walked in on the nurses changing the bandages. He looked at me like I was revolting…broke up with me that night over the phone…”
“Sshhh,” Jensen tried to sooth. He was still angry with Jared for not telling him the whole truth, but a part of him understood. He’d never been through that and didn’t know how it felt. It had always been obvious that Jared was insecure and self-conscious about his scars. Now he knew why. “Come here.”
Jared allowed Jensen to pull him into his arms. He laid his head against Jensen’s broad chest. Jensen pressed a kiss against Jared’s head and moved his hand so that it covered the scar above Jared’s heart. He now knew that it was Lehne’s signature. He could see the twisted edges of the crude attempt at the lily where the v of Jared’s shirt had ridden down. Jensen wasn’t sure how he never put it all together before. It was obvious that Lehne never had had the chance to finish it, but you could still tell that it was his mark.
Jensen closed his eyes as the guilt, anger, and other emotions began to build up once more. He pushed them away as he leaned down to kiss the twisted flesh on Jared’s chest. He heard Jared sniffle at the action.
“Thought you’d hate me,” Jared softly confessed.
“Could never hate you,” Jensen said with determination. He moved so that his face was inches from Jared’s. “I love you. Just because I’m pissed that you never told me doesn’t mean that I hate you. It just means that I got upset. I care about you so damn much. When I thought about you in there with that…monster when he had done so much to you…I snapped.”
“I shouldn’t have kept it from you. I love you too, and I couldn’t stand the idea of you hat-“
“Not gonna happen, babe.” Jensen leaned in for another kiss, this time to Jared’s lips.
Jared leaned into the show of affection and returned it with all he had.
“We’ll get past this, Jay,” Jensen said once they finally parted. He pulled Jared to his chest once more and the younger man burrowed into him.
“Thank you,” Jared sighed with relief. He knew all this would be short lived. He didn’t doubt that Jensen still loved him and cared for him. He just didn’t expect things to go well. Not when he still had to tell Jensen that he wasn’t giving up on the undercover work…
*********
“You sure you should be doing this?”
Tom huffed as he tightened his pinstriped tie. “Mike, it is just a job.”
“I know, but,” Mike pushed himself off the bed and crossed the room towards his husband, “this is Senator Lehne and you know he’s just a manipulative politician.”
“Aren’t they all?” Tom smiled and turned towards his husband. He pulled the man close to him and gave him a kiss on the forehead.
“He’s different, Tommy. You know the police have been after him for murder for years.”
“How do you know that?”
“Reporter…may not be the great investigator that you are but I still know my way around a police database.”
“That’s my boy,” Tom teased. He leaned in for another kiss, but Mike stopped him with a hand on his chest. “What?”
“I don’t think you should be working for him.”
“Mikey, I can’t turn this down. This job is big bucks, man. We’d be set! I could take you on that honeymoon you’ve always wanted…”
“I don’t care about all that shit. I just care about you…about us being together. I don’t want you to get mixed with someone like Lehne.”
“I’ll be fine, babe.” Tom rubbed his hands up and down Mike’s arms. “I’m not doing anything illegal, and I’ll watch my back when I’m around him. Don’t worry.” He gave Mike another kiss. “Now,” he said as he turned towards the mirror once more. He smoothed down the edges of his suit and adjusted his hair. “I’ve gotta get outta here if I’m going to make it in time. I’ll see you later. I’ll bring Chinese home with me for dinner. Love you!”
Before Mike could answer, Tom was out the door and rushing towards his Sebring. He quickly threw it into gear and peeled out of the driveway. He couldn’t be late to his first real meeting with Lehne, not when he had such juicy news for the senator.
He was soon pulling up to Lehne’s office. The building was one of the oldest in the state of Texas and had been kept immaculately. Tom took it all in as he grabbed his briefcase full of files and walked inside.
“Can I help you?” Lauren asked once Tom neared her desk, smiling at him pleasantly.
“Tom Welling…have an appointment with the senator,” he replied with charm.
Lauren’s smiled faltered. “Go on in. He’s expecting you.”
“Thank you.” Tom crossed over to the large door and knocked before entering. “Sir?”
“You must be Welling,” Lehne said with a grin. He offered his hand and Tom took it to shake. “Pellegrino’s told me great things about you. I just hope you can deliver as well as he has said.”
“I assure you I can, sir,” Tom replied, trying his hardest to keep his cool.
“Good…take a seat.”
“Thank you. Tom took a seat across from Lehne and took out his briefcase. “I believe you’ll be pleased with what I have for you, senator.”
Lehne’s eyes narrowed and another grin appeared on his face. He motioned for Tom to continue.
“The team you have on you are smart…the best in the field from what I’ve read. You have Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the head. He replaced Jim Beaver when he stepped up into the FBI. Before that he had worked extensively under the man and still consults with him. Underneath him, you have Jensen Ackles. He’s young…not even thirty yet. But he’s cleared more cases than men twice his age. He’s smart, but I’m pretty sure he has a weakness.”
“They all do,” Lehne smirked.
“He’s got a boyfriend who works as a criminal profiler. He’s a freaking genius from everything I’ve seen. Graduated ahead of schedule and went straight into the FBI. He works under Jim Beaver and Misha Collins. Their team has taken done a lot of high profile criminals in the three years he’s been with him. I won’t be surprised if they eventually team up and bring him in on the case. His brother already works as a the medical examiner assigned to Jensen’s team.”
“I see,” Lehne huffed. A profiler on his case could spell disaster if it wasn’t taken care of quickly. “Ackles is close to him?”
“I watched him and Jensen a couple of times…the man is completely gone over the kid. You’d think rainbows shined outta his ass with the way Jensen fauns over him.”
“Will make things easier…”
Tom felt uneasy with the implications of those words but continued onwards with his job. “I managed to snap a few pictures of them the other day…they were walking their dogs in the park.” Tom’s hand closed around the folder that contained all the photos. He pulled them out of the briefcase and placed them in front of Lehne. “To be as smart as they are, they don’t notice things that well when they aren’t on the clock. Were too wrapped up in there time together to notice me. Furthermore, they look like they have regular places that they go to…that park, Cortese Café…I followed them a couple of times.”
The senator took the folder and began to leaf through the shots.
“The slightly shorter man is Jensen. The tall one is his boyfriend.” Tom pointed at one of the pictures that Lehne still hadn’t picked up. “Jared Padalecki…”
Lehne’s hand closed around the shot of Jared by himself. He was kneeling on the grass with one of the dogs. His beautiful, dimpled face was lit by a smile. His long hair blew slightly in the wind. By all accounts, it was a wonderful picture. But all it did was make Lehne see red.
“Padalecki…”
