New York City Marble Cemetery

Jul 15, 2023 13:02

The New York City Marble Cemetery was begun in 1831 and was the second non-sectarian burial ground in the City opened to the public. The nearby (and similarly named ) New York Marble Cemetery was the first. Due to the fear of yellow fever, an ordinance was passed that prohibited burials in earth, so marble vaults were constructed underground in these new cemeteries. It is in the Bowery, and I'm a little surprised it is in as good a shape as it is.
